Longtime San Jose resident, Alfred N. Salice passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on June 20, 2022 at age 102. He was a remarkable, quiet mannered man who always put family first. He was dad, grandpa, Papa, and Uncle Al to many.
Al was born May 8, 1920 in Richmond, CA and grew up in Tracy. Al joined the Navy as WWII broke out and was assigned to the Aircraft Carrier, The USS Copahee. He was discharged in 1945 and moved to San Jose in 1946. He believed San Jose would be a great place to raise a family. He married Caroline Deni the following year and moved Caroline and her daughters, JoAnn and Carol, to be with him in his Rose Garden home.
Al worked as manager of the meat department at Rosenberg’s Market for 35 years, retiring in 1985. In retirement, Al enjoyed golfing with his Navy buddies, traveling, especially cruises, attended and hosted many Navy reunions, painting, SIRS, Ballroom dancing, and he particularly enjoyed attending his great-grandchildren’s many sporting events. After Caroline’s passing in 2005, Al became a proficient and gifted painter.
When Al was 88, he developed macular degeneration which quickly put a halt to his many activities. With a positive attitude, along with the help of daughter Carol, he began attending Vista Center for the Blind in Palo Alto joining a support group and audio book club making many new friendships, which he continued attending until age 99.
Al was predeceased in death by Caroline in 2005 and daughter JoAnn Sommers, passing 5 days before him. He is survived by daughter, Carol George, son David, and son-in-law Bob Overby. Dedicated grandfather to Rod George, Doug George, Robin Soukoulis and their spouses. He was Papa to 7 great – grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
We want to extend a very special thank you to Into Caring In Home Care, for their quality and compassionate care, especially Esther and her two daughters, Karen and Sumer, and also Lito. They treated Al like family. Also, thank you to Hospice of the Valley and their dedicated staff.
A Celebration of Life for Al will be held Sunday, August 21 at 11:00am at the Lima Mortuary located on Winchester Blvd in Santa Clara. A luncheon reception will follow next door. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Vista Center for the Blind of Palo Alto, National MS Society, or Hospice of the Valley.
