Andrew David Saso was a light hearted man who loved to laugh, volunteer his talents, and explore the world through his travel excursions, often putting himself on a train to southern California, or a midnight flight to Hawaii. His caring nature and sense of humor will be missed by all of the lives he has touched in his years.
He was born on May 17th, 1945 in Morgan Hill, California to Eleanor and Andrew Saso. He attended St. Leo Elementary School, Bellarmine College Preparatory, and San Jose State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. David had a long and committed career as he set new standards for inventory management and planning roles at United Airlines. He retired from United in 2004 after 37 faithful and rewarding years.
After his retirement, Dave became a devoted and active member of the Retired United Airlines Employee Association (RUAEA). He served as president, vice president, and treasurer of the South Bay RUAEA chapter and will be deeply missed by all. David enjoyed applying his deep talent for meticulous and intricate planning of many excursions and events for the club’s members over the years.
“Poppop” loved to take his family on adventures around the country and the world. His grandson Mark was one of his favorite travel buddies. They shared a chance of a lifetime experience in 2012, flying commercial jet flight simulators at the United Airlines Pilot Training Center in Denver, Colorado.
Generosity was always a passion of Dave’s. Having a very creative mind, he volunteered creating elaborate decorative themes and alluring displays at Transfiguration Catholic Church in San Jose, Lietz Elementary School, Dartmouth Junior High, and neighborhood holiday lighting displays.
Although volunteering was a time consuming passion of his, he set aside special time to spend with his four grandchildren – never missing a school, church, karate, or life event. He also enjoyed exploring nature on weekly hiking trips through the Bay Area and living a healthy lifestyle.
Loving husband to Joanne Saso and inspiring father to Michael and Stephanie Saso and Michele and Chris O’Neill – Lively nicknamed “Poppop” to grandchildren Mark and Gabi O’Neill and Megan and Nicole Saso – Caring sibling to Alan Saso and Mary Hobbs – He joins his father Andrew, mother Eleanor, and brother Joseph who have passed on before him.
David passed away on the evening of Thursday, January 31st, 2013. His caring nature and lighthearted sense of humor will be missed by all the lives he has touched in his 67 years he shared with us.
