Antonio was born in Cedros Faial in Azores Portugal. He married Ilda in 1950 and had their first and only daughter in 1957. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1959 in search of a better life. Antonio first worked on a ranch and saved to buy a bicycle to get around. He also worked at Pratt Low Cannery where they produced prune juice. He worked as many hours as he could get to save to buy a car and later a house. His last job was as a custodian in the Cupertino School District until he retired at the age of 63.
Antonio went on various trips and cruises with his wife Ilda and friends. He enjoyed gardening and eating. His backyard garden was always stocked with fresh kale before anyone knew it was a “superfood.” His favorite pastime was playing cards at the Portuguese card parties. He took the game very seriously, and if you were his partner you’d better play the right card. Antonio regularly attended Portuguese festas and went to mass every Sunday, rain or shine. Most of all, he loved his family.
He leaves behind his beloved daughter Natalie (Arnold) and two grandchildren Julie (Andrew) and Jason (Ashley) who were the world to him. He helped raise Julie and Jason, riding bicycles and enjoying many visits to the park and having McDonald's happy meals together. He also loved his great grandchildren, Kaleo, Greg and Alexa. Every time he saw them, his face lit up with a big smile. He was known as “GG Vovo” to them. Antonio is now reunited with his wife and all of his family.
Our hearts are broken, but we have gained another angel in heaven and have wonderful memories to cherish. Due to COVID, we are only having a private family service at this time and will hold a mass in his memory in the future.
