Passed away in Santa Clara, Caliomia on February 7, 2013. Bom in New Bedford,
Massachusetts, he graduated from New Bedford High School in 1948 and served in the United
States Naval Reserve from 1950 to 1951 and the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He
was married in Spokane, Washington in 1954, moved to East Palo Alto, California in 1955 and to
Santa Clara in 1956. He was a Social Science teacher and soccer coach with the Santa Clara Unified
School District from 1962 to 1986.
He is survived by his loving wife, Iva, also known as Lee, daughters Deborah (William)
Salyards, Cheryl (Terry) Coe, Stephanie (Darrell) Sales, grandchildren Bree and Bill Wilder,
Nicole and Josh Lathrop, Andy and Jill Salyards, Leigh-Ann and Victoria Coe, Darrell,
Samantha Sales and great-grandchildren Grace and Katy Lathrop and Jackson Wilder in
California,, sisters Dolores Souza, and Dyan (Gary) Kieltyka, nephews and nieces Jeff and Mary
Santos, Alan Souza, Kary-Ann and Eric Kieltyka and several cousins in Massachusetts. He
attended Queen of Apostle's Church in San Jose and St. Justin's Church in Santa Clara.
From 1955 to 1962, he worked at the Palo Alto, California Post Office He obtained his AA
degree from San Jose City College in 1959. From San Jose State University, he earned his BA
Degree in Political Science, "With Distinction" in 1961, a lifetime teaching credential in 1962, and
his MA Degree in Social Science with a minor in Political Science in 1964. At Santa Clara
University, he was a participant in the NDEA Summer Institute in General English in 1966, die
Robert A. Taft Institute of Government Seminar m 1973, and obtained a Paralegal Certificate in
1992. Since 1968 he was a real estate broker dealing in residential sales and property management
and was a Honorary Member-for-Life of the California Association of Realtors.
He served sixteen years, 1989-84, as a trustee of the West Valley-Mission Joint Community
College District where he served two separate one-year terms as Board President, and eight years
with the Santa Clara County School Boards Association where he served a one-year term as vice-
president. Other community services included the Santa Clara Friends of the Library where he
edited a monthly newsletter, a two-year term, 1968-69, with the Santa Clara County Democratic
Central Committee, three years, 1989-92, as a volunteer paralegal with Senior Adult Legal
Assistance, Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury in 1998, and brief memberships with the Knights
of Columbus, Moose, and Elks Lodges. He served on the Charter Review Committee for the City of
Santa Clara in 1999 and on the Measure J Oversight Committee for the Santa Clara Unified School
District from 2008 to 2010. He also served as an AARP Tax-Aide income tax preparer at the Santa
Clara Senior Center, a Host volunteer at the information desk at San Jose International Airport,
and was a past member of the Santa Clara Senior Advisory Commission, the Santa Clara County
Council on Aging Advisory Council, and an active member of the California Senior Legislature.
A private family burial service will be held. A memorial service will held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 12th at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary 466 N Winchester Blvd. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to the Santa Clara Schools Foundation, Santa Clara Firefighters
Foundation, the California Senior Legislature, or the Health and Wellness Foundation at the
Santa Clara Senior Citizen Center.
