I just learned of Harry's passing today Sept. 17,2021. Harry was a great man. He and my father were co-workers together for at least 33 years-in fact they retired on the same day in 1985. I know they played more then their share of practical jokes on each other, but they had a great  personal and professional relationship with each other. I remember my mom and Barbara also being life long friends-Barbara helped me out with my mom (taking her to appointments)when my mom first developed Alzheimer's. I also remember being friends with Cory and Shelly when we were just young kids(those cop get togethers at their house).It is so sad to see the "old guard of the SCPD" passing on ..My best regards to all  the family and friends of Harry. To the family:  we are so sorry for your loss. Harry was one of a kind.
Something like this can sure take you back in time.  I first met Harry in 1969 when he did my background and I was hired. He was a straight shooter and remained so during the over 50 years we knew each other. Harry was a true professional.
Many of us have remarked that we always saw Harry and Bruce Lindberg together everywhere. They were a great team, both on and off duty.
We will miss Harry, but know he is in Heaven with many others from our SCPD family who we enjoyed and admired all of these years. May God bless you Harry...

Harry Burns was a great boss with an easy going manner. His give and take sense of humor and management style made working in the Detective Bureau a pleasure.  I will miss you Harry . R.I.P

I was hired in July of 1979 and was fortunate to work under the direction of some great Lts. and Captains, one being Happy Harry Burns.  Harry was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor.  We had a lot of fun over the years and I will cherish those memories.  I know he is up there with Bruce, Don, Bernie and others that have gone before, enjoying 10-18!  My condolences to Babs, Cory and Shelly and their families.  May you Rest in Peace Harry.  

Harry Burns hired me in 1971 for the position of Dispatcher. In years later I took a few classes he taught at West Valley. 
 Harry was a kind, gentle man with a presence as big as his stature.  Always willing to be teased and have a good laugh with.
My condolence to his family and all those who loved him.

Harry had a reassuring and calming presence in all his contacts.  My respect for him years ago only grew when I learned he walked to work every day.  He was one of the greats and one of the best Captains I have ever worked for.  Pete Pearson SCPD 1977-2002

Harry was wonderful man. Great since of humor and very caring. When I was injured he stayed in surgery waiting room with my family until surgery was completed and I was stabilized.  His caring helped a great deal. He will me missed. God bless Harry and his family.

Harry was the best!

Harry was a Lieutenant when I was hired in 1967.  We had much in common as I had grown up just blocks from his home, and we’re both veterans.
When I took a military leave, 67–69, he insured the city continued my benefits, etc.
He had a fabulous sense of humor and we often joked. He loved his family, his coworkers, and the city of Santa Clara.
Harry could be described as one of the old guard who developed the Santa Clara Police Department into a caring and professional organization.
My sympathy and condolences do you Barbara and your daughters.
