Cherished and loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, Irma passed away after a short illness surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband, Martin Boland, and her sisters Edith "Bobbie" Smith and Peggy O'Neill, and nephews Martin Kupps and Patrick O'Neill.
She is survived by her children Ann Jones, Mary Ratner, and Kathy Boland; grandchildren Kathy Nolan, Christopher Jones (Jenny), Rebecca Novotchin (Brent), Adrienne and Lisa Ratner, and Lily and Dana Hickenbottom (Monica); sons-in-law Brad Jones, Barry Nolan, Marty Ratner, and Gary Hickenbottom; and nieces and nephews Robert Kupps, Brian O'Neill, Margie Black and David and Barry Smith. She is fondly remembered by many friends, young and old, whose lives were touched by her kindness, intelligence, feistiness, and generosity of spirit.
Irma was born in Washington, D.C. in 1916 and moved to Santa Clara in 1945. She often spoke of raising her daughters with her late husband of 61 years as the work of which she was most proud. She was additionally fulfilled by working for the FBI prior to her marriage and for Santa Clara County Social Services after her daughters were grown. Irma was an avid baseball fan supporting both the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's. She was noted for remembering their baseball stats better than any of her family and friends.
