Cornelius Johannus “John” Besseling was born on April 1, 1933 in Zwaag, Netherlands and passed away on October 16, 2023. He was the devoted husband of Marietje “Ria” Lucia Haarsma, and loving father of Marian Plata (Brad), John Besseling, Charlene Beasley Gubera (Dave), Sheila Besseling, Aleta Ostlund (Scott).
John was proud of his Dutch heritage, and an even prouder American citizen. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and moved to the United States in 1962 with his wife and oldest daughter Marian. They settled in San Jose, California where the rest of the Besseling children were born and raised.
John started Besseling Construction Company in 1966. As an immigrant, John worked tirelessly to provide a better life and opportunities for his family, including building a family home in Tahoe City where many memories were shared. His entrepreneurial spirit and drive inspired his children to follow in his footsteps, each owning their own business. He faced every challenge in his life with faith in God, courage, and determination.
John’s faith was a pillar in his life, dedicating countless hours to the Bingo Crew and Men’s Club at St. Frances Cabrini and using his construction expertise wherever needed at the church. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister and with the Knights of Columbus. In his retirement, he devoted much of his time managing the new construction of St. Josephs in Lincoln.
John loved playing games and you would often find him playing cribbage, Rummikub, or Pester with his family. He enjoyed cheering on his beloved San Francisco Giants and 49ers and never missed a chance to watch a soccer game. John took many trips and traveled the world with his family and friends.
John captured his unique life story in his autobiography which was published in 2014. His story emphasizes the importance of family, strong morals, perseverance, and faith. He was a remarkable man whom his family and friends could always depend upon and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Nelly Stuyt Besseling, 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by Ria, Sheila, Debi, Brian, Melissa, Amelia, and Jack.
