Mostly known as Mom, Josie, or Auntie Finnie, she was a strong, independent, and very resourceful woman. At a young age she experienced the loss of her father at aged 12 and was raised mainly by her mother.
She became a mother at a very young age having had 4 children by the time she was 25 and decided that having a 5th at 33 would round out the tribe.
If you ask any of her children, they will tell you she was strict and never missed a moment to teach her children what it was to work hard and respect others. She upheld the meaning of integrity and passed it along to her family. And, while her expectations were high, she loved unconditionally. As she got older and her children became more independent, she became very proud of each of them and supported them time after time.
She was an amazing grandmother, and her grandchildren had the upmost respect for her. The conversations she’d have with them were transparent, loving and of course, she’d always have an opinion to provide, or better yet wisdom to pass along.
She was a good friend to so many. She embraced her children’s friends, loving them and caring about them as if they were her own. Her heart and love were always available.
While mom loved all her children deeply, she had a very close relationship with her daughter, Theresa. Unfortunately, Theresa passed in December 2020 due to Covid-19 complications. This impacted the family greatly, but truly broke Mom’s heart and afterward she was never quite the same.
However, because she was who she was, mom gathered her courage to move it forward, and yet the siblings knew it was a brave front and accepted it for what it was. Her children were all inclusive when it came to their mother. Always letting her in to their lives be it trips—her favorite was cruising, shopping, friend gatherings or just spending time at one another’s homes.
Mom will be remembered for many things, but most famously for her salsa. She could’ve bottled the stuff, trademarked it, and become famous. Instead, she shared it with family and friends, and it’ll be her legacy for many years to come.
There will never be a woman quite like Josephine Trejo. Her depth of sincerity, kindness and unconditional love will remain with the many who had the fortune of crossing her path.
Forever in our hearts, we love you.
