Maria G.I. Vogel

From our family’s loving arms our cherished mother Maria G.I. Vogel passed away peacefully on 2/11/12. Maria is survived by her loving family: daughter Juanita M. Vogel Berlo (husband, Robert C.) of Livermore; sons Fr. Marcel J. Vogel of Great Falls, Mont., and Robert D. Vogel (wife, Celia) of San Jose; and son-in-law Ronald K. Scudder (husband of Maria’s late daughter Kathryn) of Livermore. Maria is also survived by seven precious grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Mark (and Susan) Berlo of Manteca; John (and Laurie) Berlo of Santa Rosa; Michael Vogel (and Nadia); Steven Vogel; Nicholas Vogel; Matthew Castillo and Victoria Castillo of San Jose; and two great-grandchildren, Dominic and Jessica Berlo of Santa Rosa. Maria was born in Mexico City on April 4, 1914. She was the second oldest of seven children. She came to the U.S. in May 1919. Maria went to Saint Raphael’s Grammar School in San Rafael and The Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, were she played center in basketball; she attended business school in San Francisco.

Maria and the late Marcel J. Vogel enjoyed 49 years of marriage until his death in 1991. They enjoyed traveling to many destinations and spent wonderful vacations together in England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Egypt, New Zealand, and Australia. Maria lived in the family home in the Rose Garden area of San Jose for more than 50 years. Maria and Marcel were very active with their children’s activities and received awards for their contributions to several events at Notre Dame High School. Maria was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and home repair. Maria was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of St. Leo’s Church and was active in the Rosary Sodality.

Maria’s love of her family was ever present, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by a large extended family, of cousins, nieces, nephews. Even in her later years she continued to remember family and friends birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and many other special occasions. For several years Maria was cared for by her son Robert and daughter Juanita. They were very fortunate to have so many special times with her.

Friends are invited to celebrate her life at a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Thursday 2/16/2012 at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary, 466 N. Winchester Blvd, Santa Clara. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday 2/17/2012 at St. Leo’s Church 88 Race St, San Jose. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma.
