After 101 remarkable years, our grandmother, Mary Dorcich Amstutz, rests in Heaven. The daughter of Croatian immigrants, she married Al Amstutz at age 17; they shared 59 happy years. Granny witnessed this region’s evolution from orchards and fields to freeways and urban sprawl. She went from riding in a horse drawn wagon bringing produce from Watsonville to San Jose, to enjoying satellite television while wearing computerized hearing aids. Her rambling stories chronicled the history of our valley through the business endeavors and social activities of family and friends. She spun ghost visions of schoolhouses, orchards, churches, restaurants, and dance halls long replaced by chain stores, malls, housing tracts, and freeways. Though she witnessed incredible change, her fierce love for her family remained constant. With her passing we lose a piece of our collective past. She is preceded in death by just about everyone, including her beloved son Bud. Services will be Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 11am in the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery chapel, 490 Lincoln St. Santa Clara. Flowers may be sent in care of Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary.
