In 1958 at the age of 19, Mary and her sister, Dora, sought a new life in the United States of America. Mary and Dora made their way to Santa Clara, California where they would connect with Tia Fernandes and later their mother, Aurora Fernandes. Shortly after Mary’s arrival, she received her first job at one of the world’s largest apparel companies, Levis Strauss, where she worked in the factory in San Jose.
Soon after, she met her future husband, Joseph Arias, during night school at Roosevelt High in downtown San Jose where they both were learning English. Despite coming from different backgrounds and speaking different languages, they fell in love and then married at la Iglesia de Sta. Catarina de Siena in Phoenix, Arizona on June 23, 1961.
Together Mary and Joseph had 3 children together Fatima, Michael, and Manuel. Following the birth of her daughter, she transitioned into the role of a stay-at-home mother, dedicating herself to the care of her children and subsequently, her five grandchildren. Mary took pride in her family and cherished gatherings with her loved ones. She loved being surrounded by her family, especially during the holidays. She devoted so much time to family but was also an active member of the local Portuguese community including S.E.S. Hall, Luso America, the Our Lady of Fatima Society, and the Santa Clara Sporting Soccer Club.
Mary's legacy endures through her three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her enduring love and devotion towards her family and friends will forever be cherished and remembered..
