Though her life was not without hardship, Nidya often said she had been truly blessed. In her twenties, during a time of political unrest in Cuba, she narrowly escaped arrest and fled the country with her husband, Felix. Together, they built a new life from the ground up in the United States. A decade later, they proudly became U.S. citizens—forever grateful to a country that offered them refuge and opportunity.
Nidya believed in hard work but also the power of charity. She was especially thankful to those who supported her along the way: the Johnsons of Bakersfield, who welcomed her and Felix as newcomers from a distant island; the wonderful neighbors in San Jose, where she lived for over fifty years—particularly Maria next door, who became a dear friend and constant companion; the “Lovely Ladies” of South Hills Church, who provided a new community and friendship to Nidya after Felix’s passing in 2003;.her caregiver, also named Maria, who attended to her needs with patience and devotion; and the dedicated team at Bethany Home, whose care and kindness in her final year meant so much.
Above all, Nidya cherished her family. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was steadfast and unconditional—each of them a source of pride and joy throughout her life.
Nidya is survived by her sons, David (Brandye) and Dennis (Jamie), her three grandchildren, Elizabeth (Patrick), Zachary, and Noah, and two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Aiden.
Beloved by all who knew her, Nidya leaves behind a legacy of resilience, gratitude, and quiet strength.
