San Jose, CA
Patrick Pizzo was born and raised in San Jose, California. He graduated from Willow Glen High School in 1961. He graduated from SJSU with a BS in Materials Engineering and served as an officer in the Air Force. He received a MS degree and a PhD in Materials Engineering from Stanford. Patrick went on to work at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View and the GE Plant in San Jose. He was a Professor of Materials Engineering and served as a Department Chair while on faculty during his 20 years of employment at SJSU. He was an active member of the ASM Professional Society and an active participant of the SCVSEFA.
Patrick enjoyed retirement and lived life to its fullest. He volunteered at his grandchildren’s schools, tutored/mentored all ages, consulted in industry and maintained websites for Materials Engineering. He was very active; golf, tennis, softball, hiking, and gardening. He enjoyed researching early San Jose City History, with particular focus upon the Lewis Canal in Willow Glen. His leadership and participation as an active community member was far reaching. He participated in public hearings and city government committees, advocating for senior softball facilities in Santa Clara County and more. He was active in his neighborhood, and helped create a demonstration garden. Patrick also attended and led book club events through SJPL and took an active role in several Parks and gardening associations, like CNPS, Parks and Rec, Parks Advocate, MFPA, GOGP, Coyote Meadows Project, and Hellyer Park, to name a few. He mentored the Branham SPARE Program to promote youth in gardening ventures and their future leadership in developing public park spaces.
Patrick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diane Pizzo, his son Michael Pizzo, daughter and son in law Amy and Derek Huddlestun, as well as his grandchildren, Ryan and Megan Huddlestun. He will be greatly missed, though his spirit will live on in all of us.
