Phillip Joseph Piazza, 85, passed away on November 3rd, 2022 in his home in San Jose, California. He is survived by his two daughters, Laura and Diana; five grandchildren, Jake, Katie, Michael, Jamie, and Nicholas; one great-grandson, Bryson; son-in-law, Keith and granddaughter-in-law, Megan. Throughout his life, he was married to Rosemary for 24 years and Marguerite for 17 years.
Phillip grew up in San Jose with his parents, Nona and Ignatius “Naise”, and his sister Josephine. Growing up he was a renowned athlete and high school star football player. After graduation, he joined the Air Force and traveled the world. He met Rosemary while in the service, got married, and built a family together. He became a firefighter and began raising his family in the Bay Area. Notably in his career, Phil was the first firefighter in California to use the jaws of life. Phil was a devoted father, basketball coach and supported his children’s every endeavor. When he retired, he spent his time traveling and investing.
Phil was an even more devoted grandfather, known affectionately as “Papa”. He was known for the quick phone call, celebrating every milestone, cheering on every achievement, and sharing his words of wisdom. His family will remember him for the support, advice, and wisdom he provided to them over the years. This love extended not just to his family, but every person he came into contact with. People remember his spirit, kindness, and devotion to caring for others. His wisdom and guidance helped so many.
Phil believed in working hard and earning an honest living. He famously advised “never give a racehorse a day off” meaning keep working every day, even a little; have something to do, something to occupy your mind. He lived by this motto until the day he died. Phil was surrounded by those he loved and passed away peacefully. He was a special person and the world will be truly different without him here. A rosary service will be held on Tuesday, November 15th at St. Clare Church at 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a contribution to the VA Hospital of Palo Alto.
