He is a member of the Bellarmine Sports Hall of Fame and later worked with San Jose Buddhist Judo, where he achieved his lifelong goal of obtaining his black belt.

His undying interests included stained glass, woodwork, philately, train collecting, classic car restoration, fishing, traveling in the RV, charcuterie, and lastly, technology. He purchased an early Apple computer in 1979, having Steve Wozniak secure it in the trunk of his car for the trip home. Richard was always teaching and learning something new.
