He was born in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After graduating from Cornell University, he went to Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. While he was there he met and married Anne Highsmith.
When he went overseas, Anne went to Hornell, New York, to live with Richie's parents. Richie returned from France in the summer of 1946 and Anne gave birth to their daughter Annette in March of 1947.
Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Richie went to New York University in the summers for several years and earned his PhD in Business Education. He taught at High Point College in North Carolina, Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Texas A and I in Kingsville.
At last he was hired by San Jose State College (as it was called then) in 1958. He taught future high school teachers how to teach high school business courses. He retired in 1981, having taught there for twenty-three years.
After Anne's death in 1989, Richard fell in love with Joyce Parris. He has been her cherished partner for twenty-seven years, happily serving as patriarch to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
Richard was kind and gentle, insightful and generous, playful and sincere. From strolls around the local track to international expeditions, he loved to explore.
