Our dear mother, Sylvia Anne Busch, was escorted to heaven by our late father, William A. Busch, in a glowing white carriage on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. Her loving spirit and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of her 8 children and 17 grandchildren. She was bright & happy, vibrant & loving, loyal & patriotic, sassy & selfless. She will be missed by many.
Born on February 13, 1932 in Mascoutah, IL, she was the only girl of 5 children to Oscar and Elsie Haas. Sylvia attended nurses training at St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis, MO, and graduated in 1953. One night, several of her friends and Sylvia were invited to a dinner party where she met her future husband, Bill.
In October 1954, Sylvia and Bill were married and moved into their house in St. Louis, where she noticed a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge hanging on the wall. This was a preview of things to come. Sylvia continued to work as a nurse until the arrival of their first of 8 children in 1956. In 1960, they relocated the family to the Bay Area so Bill could follow his passion to become a stock broker. Being the devoted wife, she brought four children out to a place where the family knew no one, and they started a new chapter in their lives. Sylvia joined the Ladies Guild at Saint Martin of Tours, where all of the children attended elementary school. She also joined the Italian Catholic Federation, and Volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital.
With grace, humor, and endless energy, Sylvia managed her busy household. She loved to bake, garden, dance, water exercise, bowl and follow the SF Giants. Her Saturday morning cakes, finger rolls, and cookies are legendary. As a Giants season ticket holder for over 45 years, she was thrilled to see them win the recent championships. Sylvia always attended the Fan Appreciation game, with hope that some year she would win the car. She was always willing to go on an adventure, which included trips down the Grand Canyon, New York, Europe, and travels back to her hometown of Mascoutah, IL.
A devout Catholic, Sylvia believed in the power of prayer and attended mass daily for “…the health and well being of the family.” Her passion was the family, and she attended numerous events and activities her children and grandchildren became involved in. The annual trips to Lake Tahoe and Pismo Beach will not be forgotten, Grandma’s house was adored. It was full of holiday décor, a steady stream of sweets, spirited game playing, excessive spoiling, and hugs.
Those left to treasure the memory of Sylvia’s life include her children Mark (Debra), Joan (Dan), Paul (Julie), Mary (Eric), Carol (Peter), Ann (Jon), Bill (Kristi), Damian, Grandchildren, sisters – in – law Virginia & Rosemary Busch and Mary & Jane Haas. Her beloved husband Bill, precede her in death in 1996.
