Vincent Paul Vergano was born on June 20, 1962, at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, California, to proud parents Esther and Larry Vergano. Vincent passed away on June 15, 2026, after fighting valiantly for three months. Throughout his life, he was known by many names: Vincent, Vince, Vinnie, Dad, and, to his chagrin, Bubba. But only one person was allowed to call him that.
In July 1969, the Vergano family moved to Santa Clara, California. Around that time, a local soccer league was just beginning, and Vincent joined one of the first teams. He possessed incredible footwork, and watching him skillfully maneuver the ball across the field was a joy. Because soccer was still new to the area, a reporter from the Tribune attended one of the games to cover the growing sport. The following day, the newspaper featured an article highlighting Vincent's remarkable footwork. His family was immensely proud.
Vincent attended Sutter Elementary School, home of the frog jump, where his teachers often spoke of what a delight he was and how well-mannered he was. He had a warm smile that could brighten any room. He later graduated from Buchser High School and attended De Anza College for a short time.
Vincent had a natural talent for working with numbers. During high school, he dreamed of becoming an actuary. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Maria Couto. The two were married on March 26, 1988, at Saint Clare Church in Santa Clara. Together, they built a beautiful life and welcomed two children, Nicholas and Kelli, who became Vincent's greatest pride and joy.
From a young age, Vincent believed in hard work. He worked at a supermarket, at Beacon Gas Station, at Pioneer Chicken, and later drove trucks for Ryder Logistics and Knorr Steel. He eventually found his career with the City of Santa Clara Parks and Recreation Department, where he faithfully served for approximately 26 years before retiring in 2024.
Retirement gave Vincent the opportunity to fulfill a dream of playing golf at Pebble Beach. As a retirement gift, his family gave him 18 holes of golf for two at the legendary course. It was an experience he really enjoyed.
Vincent was a devoted fan of the Raiders and the Athletics. He enjoyed putting together sports pools, played on a recreational softball team, was commissioner for a fantasy football league, and especially enjoyed the game of golf. Every July, he looked forward to participating in an annual golf tournament with his close friends. He was also a history enthusiast who loved learning about the past.
Vincent and Maria loved celebrating Halloween together, creating unforgettable memories with their creative costumes. One of their most memorable costumes was dressing as Shrek and Fiona.
Vince was known for making the best mashed potatoes and would bring them to holiday gatherings to the delight of all. He also brought people together around the barbecue, hosting countless backyard gatherings where family and friends created memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Above all else, he was a devoted family man who loved spending time with those he cherished most. His kindness, gentle spirit, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always.
Vincent is preceded in death by his wife, Maria, on June 28, 2025. He is survived by his loving parents, Esther Flexen and Larry Vergano (Arlene); his son, Nicholas; his daughter, Kelli; his sister, Tina Billingsley (Ron); his brothers, Steve Vergano (Michelle) and Craig Flexen (Joanne); his nieces and nephews, Shannon Parungao (Jon), Brian Bezerra (Suzy), Steven Vergano (Jessica), Jacob Billingsley, Kyle Billingsley, Kaiya Vergano, and Kadin Vergano; great-nieces and great-nephews Eliza, Christina, Ella, Aurelia, Frankie, Cosmo and Mary Margaret; Cherished in-laws Carlos Couto (Molly), Mario Couto (Lisa), Linda Navarrete (Tony), and sister-in-law Laurie Couto (Paul); along with nieces and nephews Lindsey, Ryan, Rosie, Chris, Kailey, Elizabeth and especially Landon, to whom Vince was a beloved surrogate Peepaw. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and very dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He touched the lives of many and was deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
