

Darlene Agnes Manning May of Westchester, California passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at the age of 80 after a brief illness. She was born on November 9, 1942 and lived her entire life in Westchester. She graduated from Westchester High School in 1960, and one of her fondest memories was that Elvis Presley played at her prom AND sat at her table! While working at the Los Angeles International Airport, she met James A. Manning, they fell in love, and married on June 15, 1963. In 1965, she gave birth her beloved son, Patrick. She then went on to work at Loyola Marymount University for 38 years beginning in the 1970s. She worked as the Assistant to the Dean of the School of Business. She was married to Jim Manning until his death in 1978. A few years later while working at LMU, she met her second husband, Joel H. May. They married on September 15, 1984 and spent many happy years together until his death in 2006.
She was actively involved in the Westchester Women’s Club where she was in charge of the monthly newsletter for several years. She was also a member of the Playa Del Rey Wonen’s Club. She enjoyed collecting sunflowers, attending LMU basketball games, attending Broadway musicals at the Ahmanson Theater, knitting, going to the movies, and loving on her cats, Oreo and Sugar.
She was preceded in death her parents, William and Agnes Gertig.
She is survived by her beloved son, Patrick Manning, and her cherished grandchildren Austin Manning and Savannah Manning (aka Tigris); and her much loved brother, Gary Gertig and his wife Betsy. She also leaves behind three dear stepdaughters, Cathy, Chrissy, and Amber May, as well as a legion of loving friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Providence St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica for the care and compassion they showed to her and the family during her final days.
