Guy Willie Stewart

Guy Willie Stewart, the youngest of Rev. Timothy and Malinda Stewart’s eight children, was born on August 25, 1934 in Angleton, Texas. He was named for two of his father’s brothers, Guy and Willie and for Uncle Guy’s wife, Willie. Being blessed with so many family names demonstrates the love with which Guy was greeted, and which was a part of his life until the day he passed away.

A gifted athlete in football, basketball, and track, Guy was graduated from Marshall High School in Angleton Texas. He matriculated at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, the school attended by his two older brothers, and where three of his nieces also attended. After one year he decided to enlist in the United States Marines in order to help his parents provide for a sister whose handicapping condition placed economic strains on his parents. Guy served honorably in the Marines, from February 1954 to February 1958, rising to the rank of Sergeant.

On a trip from Camp Pendleton to Los Angeles, Guy met the girl of his dreams: Vivian Hale. Their love quickly developed, and they were married on May 22, 1960. Their lives were blessed with a beautiful little baby boy whom they named Spencer.

Guy worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, rising quickly from the position of janitor to carpenter’s apprentice, then to carpenter. He was soon promoted to supervisor. He served the School District faithfully for 36 years, and then moved to the retired state.

Guy was raised in the Church, where he accepted Christ as his savior. The church of his upbringing in Texas was named Ward’s Chapel United Methodist Church. It is fortuitous that his church home in Los Angeles was also named Ward. Guy was a longtime member of Ward AME Church, where he served as Steward, Trustee and member of Band of Men. He especially loved being an Usher, and served faithfully as an Usher until he was no longer able.

Guy transitioned from this life on July 21, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, The Rev. Mr. Timothy Stewart and Mrs. Malinda Stewart; four sisters, Vera Lee Stewart, Juanita Stewart Thomas and Spouse, (Willie), Mollie Bell Stewart Hall and Spouse, (Leon), Beatrice Stewart Kennedy (Bea) and one brother, Timothy Stewart Jr., and his former Spouse (Alvilda Scott Stewart).

Guy leaves his loving and caring memories to his wife, Vivian Stewart; son Spencer Guy Stewart and Spouse (Derrell) of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by one sister, Ms. Ernestine Stewart Mitchell of Houston, Texas; and one brother, The Reverend Richard Earl Stewart (Dr. Jeannette Anderson Stewart) of Nashville, Tennessee and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and friends.

Visitation on Monday, July 30, 2012 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Gates, Kingsley & Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Directors-1925 Arizona Ave. santa Monica, CA 90404. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 10:00am at Ward A.M.E. Church 1177 West 25th St. Los Angeles, CA 90007. Interment to follow at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
