On July 10, 2014, Helen Iredell Gulick, known to her many friends as Sally, passed gracefully away in her Pacific Palisades home of 50 years, after 97 years of serving and loving all who knew her. Sally was born June 6, 1917 in Akron, Ohio to the family of one of the many rubber barons. She was the spouse of Robert A. Gulick Jr., Class of ’39 at the Naval Academy, a decorated pilot flying a torpedo plane off the carrier Essex in the Pacific during WWII and they hosted a very close-knit group of revelers and golfers. He retired a Naval captain becoming a stock broker for Dean Witter, now Morgan Stanley, and died in 2002.
In her last years she enjoyed
• playing bridge with her clubs, exercising at Curves and traveling to see friends and family.
• serving her college fraternity, Kappa Kappa Gamma, especially the UCLA chapter as finance adviser, and attending the bi-annual convention even in her last month.
• caring for her many pets: two house cats, two feral cats, and “Mimi”, a Chihuahua mix, the last in a long lineage of Shepherds and Westies.
• displaying a vast accumulation of stuff collected in a rich lifetime, including being the voting location for Ronald and Nancy Regan.
• watching her favorite basketball and football teams and especially hosting the annual Army-Navy game party.
• and all with a steadfast refusal to learn how to use a computer.
She kept in touch with all with an annual Valentine’s letter filled with news fit to print and photos as we aged through the years.
She was mother to three: Robert, 72 Colorado; Susan, 68 Pennsylvania; and Sally Ann, known as Arin, who died in 2012 after many years as care giver. She was “Mom;” and to her two grandchildren Dana and Ryan and step granddaughter Anastarr; and three great-grandchildren Grace, Maclaren and Everrett; and countless hordes, she was “GeeGee.” You will be greatly missed and we hope you find the accommodations to your liking on the other side. We love you Mom.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at her home in Pacific Palisades on Aug. 31 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and in Akron, on Sept. 13th , where her ashes will be interred.
