I found this slip of paper John kept quite by happy accident.

I think it's very special.

Be gentle with yourself

and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace within your soul.
With all its sham and drudgery
and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

The man was unique and smart
from us he did part.
At 92 and still going
he wanted to go back to his home in Youngstown
and I did it for him
I hope he found the God he looked for all his life
whose reality was close at hand 
always as a grain to a beach of sand

John Hanley was my uncle and I knew him when I was a young boy in Youngstown, Ohio. I remember his going and then coming home from long trips. He would tell us kids about his adventures on the high seas. He went on to get a Masters degree in Theology and none of us knew what that was. We thought he was becoming a priest, but he was studying Theology to become a teacher. John was a good man who liked to travel the world and was always ready to take off. He passed away Sept.9, 2012. We will miss him. Bruce Walker
