In 1945 the family moved to New York, where he attended his Senior Year of Highschool, and went on to graduate from St. Lawrence University.
After College he was drafted and served honorably in Korea, eventually returning to his family in New York. Upon his return Bill was introduced to Charles E. Merrill, who sent him west to find investors in a new brokerage that would eventually become Merrill Lynch. William arrived in Los Angeles with a string of Polo ponies, a heavy southern accent and not much else.
Within months of his arrival he found himself rubbing elbows with some of the most influential names of his time, many of whom went on to become his friends and eventually his clients, as his kind heart, sharp mind, and unbending integrity were obvious to all he came in contact with. In 1968 he was introduced to Lesley Blennerhassett by his good friend Michael Hynes, who married them in 1970.
Survived by his wife and 2 sons, John Mattingly Barbour and Beau Blennerhasset Barbour, and daughter in laws Amy Ninh and Tarrah Barbour, his family is proud of each and every one of his 92 years.
