Migrating to California in 1937 with his family, after his days of rabbit trapping, one room schoolhouse, and baseball with a homemade uniform, he worked in the beanfields, orchards and dairy farm in Oxnard, Saitcoy and Santa Paula. Called into the Army, he was chosen to play on the AmeriCal Division baseball team in Boganville, as well as being a gunner in the 164th Infantry Division.
In 1947, Harris was the milkman delivering to a grocery store in Santa Paula when he met the love of his life. He married Gladys and became dad to her daughters, Pam (Mabry) and Karen (MacConell), and they had a third daughter, Kathy (Sinasek). As a Helms Bakery man, and later a Red Wing Shoe salesman, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Harris was a devoted, wonderful husband, father, and "Grandpa Harris" to 22 lucky children. He will be dearly missed by all.
A memorial service will be at the Church of the Foothills, 6279 Foothill Rd., Ventura, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17.
Burial arrangements under the direction of Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery.
