We thank everyone who was a part of the unforgettable novenario, especially Juanita Montoya for leading it. Miguel Campos, thank you for all the heartfelt music. Miguel, you knew Dad well and knew exactly what music Dad loved. We also thank everyone who brought food and drinks.

Obituary

Jose Merced Pineda Garcia, 87, was embraced with open arms by our heavenly father on February 13, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on May 29, 1927 in Valencianita, Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico.
He came to Santa Paula in 1953 and worked for Limoneira Company for 43 years until his retirement in 1997 at the age of 70.
Our Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, and friend. He was a man of great Catholic faith. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
He is preceded by his parents Joaquin and Concepcion Garcia, brothers Jesus and Sabino, sister Carmen, grandson Roman, and great granddaughter Olivianna.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth J. Garcia. Together they dedicated their lives to their nine children, Ruth Hernandez (Leo), Mercy Gomez (Felix), Angie Perez (Javier), Concepsion Chavez (Arnoldo), Joaquin Garcia (Rosalie), Graciela Salazar (Gabriel), Consuelo Iglesias (Jorge), Josie Rico (Elias), and Mary Campos (Miguel). The family grew to include 32 grandchildren, their spouses and 30 great grandchildren, who all lovingly called him Tata.
The viewing will take place on Thursday, February 19th, 2015 from 1:00-5:30 p.m. at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary followed by the rosary at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 7:00 p.m. The mass will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church located at 427 N. Oak Street in Santa Paula. Internment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Paula Cemetery.  Services entrusted to Skillin-Carroll Mortuary. 805-525-3391. Arrangements under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, Santa Paula, CA.

   I feel so lucky that my kids were able to know you and have their Big Tata in their lives for 15 & 8 years. Your love for us all was unlike no other, and my kids will be able to carry that with them for the rest of their lives as I have for my entire life. Even though you are not here with us, you will never really be gone. 

   I remember waving to you every time we would pass by the packing house and being so excited to see you there on your forklift. Asking you for gum that you always had from your never ending supply. Letting me and Rosie play poker with the guys and keeping our ziploc of pennies on top of the china cabinet. Thank you for all the dollars you would give us when we would leave your house. They eventually paid for my community college and my first degree.

   I love you Tata. You have shown me what it means to have faith, be brave, to love unconditionally, to never stop trying, and that family is the most important thing. Thank you for making me feel so special.

I feel like the luckiest person to have had the "Best Dad in the Whole World Ever"! I have so many fun memories. You taught me how to play Poker (deuces wild) for pennies. I loved when you would catch someone and talk their ear off and the others would laugh at them, haha. You would take us to El Brillante to buy a treat. We would always charge our goodies on your tab #540 at the Company Store in Limoneira and you would never tell us anything. I loved our "Corn Parties"! I think that was my favorite memory because that meant our family would all be together. That is what I love the most now that I am older and with my family...... spending time together. ❤ 
I remember you would give us the "Bendición" when we would travel. I wanted to go to your house just for those "Special Blessings". And whenever we'd visit and we were getting ready to leave, you would ask me to "tuck you in" and we would transfer all your belonging into the pockets of the clothes you would be wearing the next day. I loved that special time with you! You would tell me you loved me so much and kiss me and we'd say goodnight. Thank you for letting me do that!

Thank you for giving me 7 amazing sisters that took care of me and that I look up to and 1 amazing brother who always watched out for me. You raised us to care and respect one another. But most of all, you gave us a selfless Mother who would do anything for us, just like you! I love you more than words can express. I will mourn and cry with this broken heart for you and will miss you til we meet again.

Dad, as much as it hurts for me to say......Fly with the Angels and Rest in Peace! And don't forget to come see me and send me signs! I know you will continue to guide me and watch over me.

Hace mas de 30 años que tuve la fortuna de conocer su familia.  De que me reciviera y me abriera la puerta de su casa.  Poco a poco me pude ganar su confiansa y empesamos a conocernos mutuamente.  Desde entonces pude apreciar el Gran Señor que usted fue.  Pude ver aun Señor recto en su caminar, que sin decir mucho, movio montañas.  Del cariño y amor que de su corazon brotava embriago a muchas personas que lo quisieron como un parde y en ellas y ellos me incluyo.  Esto que escrivo lo vimos y lo vivimos algunos, incluso ya en sus ultimos momentos y casi moribundo "Tata's Magic" seguia trabajando y seguira aunque no fisicamente pero si espiritual.  Que este Magico abrazo que abraza a toda nuestra familia nunca termine.  Que DIOS lo tenga en su Santa Gloria.  Descanse En Paz!

I miss you so much every day.  I go to pick up the phone to call you and then I remember. 

I will miss the stories you would tell us of your adventures or when you would tell us stories of your children growing up, your eyes would just light up with pride when you spoke of us.  Just know that we all knew we were very loved. Even with such a large family, you always had a way to make each and every one of us feel special. 

I remember you asking me, if I thought you had done enough for your children.  It was just like you, a parent who loves his children more than life itself. I remember telling you that you had done better than any parent could do.  It wasn't the materialistic things you could get us, but it was the huge love that you showed us each and every day that was the biggest blessing we received from you.      

I go through the motions of living each day without you and it is not the same.  It will NEVER be the same again.

As difficult as losing you has been, I will try to overcome this huge emptiness and void I have in my heart (I know it won't be easy).

 I still find it difficult to accept the fact that you have passed on. But, I know that the entirety of our family and I can all say that we are better men, women, and children by having you as a husband, father, grandfather, great grand father, uncle, brother, and son. You have and always will be the epicenter of our family. It was one of the most devastating ordeals I have ever faced as an adult and I know that everyone in our  family can say the same. You have always been an inspiration to me by showing me what a man, father, and husband should be. You passed that onto my father and he instilled that into me because of you. I have and will always have the utmost respect for you as my grandfather, a father, and husband. You've shown me the meaning of unconditional love and support. My father showed me the same because of you and I can't thank you enough for that. You raised nine amazing and incredible children, who all passed your love and kindness onto their children. Which is one of the reasons why I love getting to spend time with our family. It is deeply disheartening to think about the fact that you are no longer here with our family. But, I know that you are in heaven looking down and watching over us all, just as you did when you were still here with us. My love for you is and will forever be infinite. Just as yours was for our family. I am honored to have been able to call you my Tata and to be one of the four last remaining Garcia men in our family. I will always do my best to make you proud and continue to carry on the Garcia legacy just as you did before. I love you Tata.

I was relieved when Mary told me you were coming home.  Though, honestly, I had already started to say, Goodbye.  I knew the Gods would come swiftly and take you away, as they never waste time with good people.  You were one of the kindest men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.  Treated me like a grandson of your own, from the first day we met.  I've always had so much respect for the man you were.  Your quietness spoke of a person who had all he needed.  Your smile told a story of the love and compassion you had for others.
Your hard work ethic and selflessness showed that life is for giving, and in doing so you were awarded some of the most amazing people to share in it with.  A family I am so very proud to be a part of.  Your love and kindness shines brightly in each one of their faces.  Truly inspiring, is how I will always remember you.

 I am truly blessed and honored to have been able to call you my dad, even though you were my father in law. I love you more than words can say. There are no words to express how much my heart aches for you, how much you will be missed, but never forgotten. I will always carry a part of you in my heart. My Father

Dad you've always been a very quiet person and most of the time I can't really tell what you are thinking or what you are feeling. But although you really don't use many words to express yourself I know down deep inside you really care and love your family. Even though it's hard for me to express my feelings in person I want you to know how much I appreciate just having you as my Father and having you here with us.

I know it was probably hard to bring up so many girls and boy, but the nice thing about it is you always had faith in us. Sure we made our mistakes but we sure learned from them. But more important just knowing you are here for us and you give us the support we need makes life all the more fulfilling. You mean so much to me as well as my family and I hope to God he will continue to give you life and good health for many years to come so that my children, your grandchildren will have their grandpa at their side to look up to. To my Dad Jose Merced P. Garcia,

One of the things in your life that brings you great pleasure and satisfaction is that of your garden. To see it grow strong and to produce abundantly.

I believe that the most fruitful garden of all that you together with my mom raised was that of your children. Like your tiny plants, you never failed to tend to our needs, always with tender loving care. You nurtured us with your moral values and spiritual guidance. You taught us to believe in ourselves and to know that we could succeed in life if we put our hearts and minds to it. And like plants who need water to grow, your unselfish and never-ending love overflowed onto each and everyone of us. You taught me about love and respect, patience and forgiveness. In turn I continue to teach these virtues to my own children.

I am proud to be your daughter and I thank the Lord that my children also have come to know and love their Tata. Their Tata who loves them with a love that they cannot yet begin to comprehend.

I don't believe in goodbyes.  I do, however, believe in 'see you later'.  This isn't farewell.  Although you may not be here physically, I will always carry you in my memories and most importantly, in my heart.

You will be ever present in the beauty of life around me.  Whether it's a random act of kindness, the smell of the ocean and sight of the waves gently hugging the shore as I drive down PCH, or the breathtakingly vivid hues of a rainbow as it stretches far across the sky, letting its colors shine bright for all to see.

We didn't get to talk too much, but what he still was able to teach me is that family is what matters.  No matter what, you would know that Tata would be there.  Whether it was family birthdays, to special occasions like weddings, he was a family man.  No doubt about it.  I'll miss you Tata!

Every time I think of you my heart fills with pride... though I'll always miss you TaTa, I know you're by my side.  In laughter & in sorrow, in sunshine & through rain... I know you're watching over me until we meet again.  Thank you for being my TaTa...love always your granddaughter.

      Thank you for showing all of us what family is about. I miss you so much, seeing you every morning, blessing me before work, seeing you when I got home, your laughter, watching your shows on TV. You always liked when I fought with nana, you would remind me when I hadn't done it in a couple of days. We would get a kick out of it. I am very blessed to be named after you and I will be sure to carry your name on. You will always be in my heart and I cherish every memory I shared with you. Will never forget you always asking me "mijo cuando vamos a ir a ver las muchachas?" always makes me laugh thinking about it. I love you Tata.

Thank you for being a great grandfather. You loved us unconditionally. You always knew the right words to say and always knew how to make us feel better. Because of you I didn't give up when I was recovering from my Brain tumor surgery and all of the rest of my complications. You always pushed me to eat and to be strong. You never gave up on me even when all I wanted to do was give up. I will forever cherish all of the great talks and love you showed me. I miss seeing your smile and hearing you laugh. Especially when you say "alrighttttt" when you got excited! You will always be part of me and in my thoughts. Thank you for everything you have done for our family. I love you Tata. Until we meet again.

Words can't explain the way I feel knowing I won't be able to physically see you again but the memories I have will stay forever. I'll always remember you going outside to read your book on "your chair" and find that you've fallen asleep, you enjoying your coffee and banana every morning and of course always letting me go play at the park with the cousins.

The memory that I will cherish the most is you being able to attend our wedding, those pictures and you in your navy blue suit, you looked so great! Thank you for teaching me to be patient and not take anything for granted. Tata I will miss you so much, I love you.

You taught us to be kind, respectful, have faith and an unconditional love for one another.  You were the best Dad anyone could have.  I can only hope I have made you proud.  I won't say goodbye, but until we see each other again.  Dad, I love you with all my heart!

Querido Tata,
I feel so lucky that I am your granddaughter. I feel fortunate that I am the oldest grandchild because for one whole month, I was the only one.  ☺ And then I had to learn to share and very quickly. I am also thankful that my sons had the opportunity to meet and love their great-grandfather. And like them, I miss you so so much. 

I will never forget how you would greet me with mi cielo. It always made me feel so special and loved.

Even though my heart hurts so very much, I take comfort in knowing that I feel, see, hear, and sense your presence all around me. I see you in my mom's strength of conviction. I see you in my Nina Ruth's leadership and faith. When I see my Nina Mary smile or hear my Tia Josie laugh, I can see and hear your infectious smile and laughter.  I see your love of reading in my Tia Mercy and the power to get through adversity in my Tia Concha. I witness your presence in my Tia Grace's reflection and strength, and my Tio Jack's hard work ethic. I see it in my Tia Connie's generous disposition. I know you are with me.

Tata, I exist because of you. Not just because you helped make my mom but also because you knew my Mama Mina from the rancho. Had my dad not come over that fateful night for dinner he might never have met my mom. Thank you.

Whenever I was going through a challenging time in school I would think of the sacrifices you made for you and your family.  That would give me the strength to get through any obstacle. I will continue to draw from your strength and your spirit during this difficult time.  

Tata, I will continue to honor your legacy and your sacrifices through my work and everything that I do.  

Tata, I will miss you so so much. I love you.

At the end of the day we all need love, and my Tata was one to give love to all.

Dad, I miss you everyday. You will be missed dearly by all. Thank you again for everything you have done for me in life. And for all you have done for all of us. I am so proud and glad to have had my two Son's to be able to pass on the Garcia name. Now my Son has his son, my grandson who will also pass on the Garcia name. Merced, viejo, desde que te conoci te quise mucho y todavia te quiero mucho. Fuiste un gran esposo y un gran padre a nuestras hijas y hijo. Estaras en mi memoria y corazon siempre y nunca te olvidare. Te amare siempre.

Tata, I have so many memories as a child. You always called me "Mi Reina" "Mi Hermosa" "Mi Cielo". You always took me to el pueblo to walk down Santa Paula's Main Street and always bought me my Martinelli's apple juice and snacks. From Main St. we walked down to the park in front of the police station and let me play while you read your western paperbacks. Sometimes, we would go get groceries from Nana's list. I can't forget the trips to MacDonald when you would buy me a happy meal. I had the best childhood being able to grow up with you and Nana!! Those memories and many others will last a lifetime and I will forever cherish them. You have always showed love, respect and kindness to me and everyone. You have touched so many people including Liana. She loves you very much! She will always remember you and have you in her heart!! Thank you for visiting her in her dream and letting us know "You were there in the church and saw us all outside". I know you will watch over us and protect us. I wish you could be here with us forever. I miss you so much!

Tata, you will be forever missed. I know you are now an Angel in Heaven looking down and are taking care of all of us. I am truly blessed to have had an amazing Tata like you. I will always remember everytime I would see you, I would give you a hug and you would say "Hi mi Cielo." It meant the world to me to have some final words with you and was able to tell you how proud I was to call you my Tata... I meant every word. Rest in peace Tata. I love you very much.

Dad, I prayed and wished you could talk to me (us) again, and you did.  I will always remember the last things you said to me.  I should have wished bigger!!! I wish you were still here, but I know in my heart this is where you are supposed to be, Spreading your Greatness in the Heavens of our Lord.  I want everyone to wish big.....I wish for Love, like the Love my Dad had for my Mom and his children! That is the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. Unconditional Love! ❤

Tata, you will always be in my heart! I miss chilling at your house & watching telenovelas with you. Even though my Spanish wasn't the best I always remember how relaxing and peaceful it was to be around you. You would always great me with, "Hola mijo!" and give me a kiss goodbye. I will cherish all the memories we had together. Especially as a child spending Christmas with you & Nana with all the cousins. I'll always greatly appreciate that you sold me your truck in my time of need. Even though we never had a real conversation my love and respect for you is huge, as big as your heart! My Dad, there are no words that can express how grateful I am. You have taught me so much growing up. You not only gave me advice about life but lead by example each and every day. I was blessed to have you as my Father. As well as my children to have their TaTa. I only hope I can be as great a Father and TaTa to my children and Grandchildren as you were to us. I will have this emptiness in my heart with your passing. But I am at peace knowing you are in Heaven with our Lord. It gives me joy that you are with all our angels and taking care of all of them. To Garcia family. Our deepest sympathy. Sr Jose was my padrino. I remember our fam. "Torres Fam."Would visit. For 4th of July celebrations. I also remember the tether ball hooked on to a tire foundation. Sr Jose , my nina and Garcia family always attended us respectfully and with a great   attitude.
