Stanley Edward Cloney

Stan attended the Nazareth Academy until the ninth grade, when he enrolled at Eureka High School, graduating in 1948. He attended Humboldt State College for two years and was then accepted into the Creighton University School of Pharmacy in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Creighton in 1954, he returned to Eureka to work alongside his father and brother Don, and later his nephew, Patrick, in the family business, Cloney’s Red Cross Pharmacy.

While helping operate the pharmacy for over forty years, Stan and his loving wife Carlotta raised seven children. There was never a dull moment as Stan enjoyed spending time with his large family on skiing, backpacking, fishing trips, and volunteering as a Cub Scout leader. He also loved gathering apples from the orchard at the cabin on the Van Duzen River and making cider and champagne. In 1981 Stan and his family built “JAWS-81” and participated in the annual Kinetic Sculpture race.

After retiring in 1995, Stan and Carlotta moved to Mt. Shasta, CA where he became active in the St Vincent DePaul Society and volunteered at his church. Stan also now had more time for skiing, fly fishing and to pursue his favorite hobby, woodworking. He completed dozens of projects over the years, with his children and grandchildren all benefiting from his skills. Perhaps his favorite project was a set of nesting tables crafted from a 102-year-old black walnut tree given to him by a friend. When he completed the tables, he submitted the design and pictures to the Woodworker’s Journal, where they were published, acknowledging his craftmanship.

Stan also attended a Windsor chair making class in New Hampshire and made Windsor chairs for each of his children.

As he turned 80 years old and grew tired of shoveling snow, Stan and Carlotta moved to Santa Rosa, CA, in 2010 to be closer to family. He continued with his woodworking projects, while also working in his yard, growing bonsai plants, and volunteering at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Stan always enjoyed hosting family gatherings and maintained his bright smile and quick humorous wit throughout his life.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Matilda Cloney and his brothers Gerald R. Cloney, William J. Cloney, and Donald E. Cloney. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carlotta and his seven children; Dianna Winter (Jim), Iver Skavdal (Cindy), Stan Skavdal (Marcia), Steve Cloney (Brenda), Jim Cloney (Monique), Jerry Cloney (Kim) and Linda Cloney. Stan is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 2nd, 2026 at 11am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Windsor, CA. There will be a reception after the service.
