Doris Mae Sjaarda Simpson passed away on November 7, 2021 in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 92. She was born on October 25, 1929, daughter of the late Bertha Brower Sjaarda and Simon Sjaarda of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jerome Morris (Jerry) Simpson. Doris and Jerry married while he served in the Navy at Great Lakes in Illinois. Upon moving back to Michigan, where Jerry became an executive at Consumer’s Power Company, Doris served with the Women’s Fellowship of the Battle Creek Congregational Church and other local volunteer organizations while raising her two daughters. She was an avid traveler, golfer at the Battle Creek Country Club, and skier in Harbor Springs, Michigan. As her husband’s career progressed Doris showed a knack for buying, beautifying and selling homes in the many places they lived. Doris also was a fine amateur actress and won critical acclaim for her starring roles in the Battle Creek Civic Theater’s productions of the Diary of Ann Frank and The Constant Wife.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Blaise (Patricia Ann) Simpson Dugan of Sausalito, CA and Pamela Simpson Molpus of Sarasota, FL; and grandchildren, Alejandro Gomez-Simpson and Adrianna Simpson.
At Doris’ request no services will be held. The family would like to thank the staff at The Heron Club for their compassionate care of Doris in her final years. In lieu of flowers please consider a gift to the Alzheimer’s Association.
