Edna Dixon Hicks

January 2, 1919January 10, 2020

Edna Eva (Dixon) Hicks, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was born on January 2, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Paul Hardy Dixon and Stella Hogg Dixon. Edna was the middle of seven children. The family moved from Atlanta to Miami, Florida in 1924. Edna lived a vibrant life as a young woman in Miami enjoying her church, loving the beach, and working in retail after graduating from Miami High School. While working in retail Edna met the love of her life, James Claude Hicks. Edna and Claude were married on October 6th, 1940. Edna and Claude welcomed two children, James Claude Hicks, Jr. and Carolyn Eva (Hicks) Rogers.

After Claude predeceased Edna on December 31, 1969, Edna never remarried. She said that no man could compare to Claude. Edna returned to college and worked very hard to provide for herself and Carolyn who was still at home at the time.

Edna was a spirited and fun loving person who was very active in her church in Miami; Pinelands Presbyterian Church. Edna worked for the Dade county school system until 1987 when she retired and taught pre-school for her church. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew hit Miami. Edna’s home was in the eye of the storm and significantly damaged. After repairing her home Edna decided to move to Melbourne, Florida to be closer to family and escape hurricane prone South Florida. So, after 68 years in Miami, Edna made the move.

Edna enjoyed living in Melbourne and became an active member of Covenant Presbyterian church where she taught preschool. In 2017 Edna moved to memory care in Sarasota to be closer to her daughter.

Edna is survived by her son, James Claude Hicks; her daughter, Carolyn Eva Rogers; six grandchildren, Marie Hicks Blanton, Jamie Hicks, Justin Hicks, Sean Rogers, Cynthia (Rogers) Collins, and Bryan Rogers. Edna was blessed with 13 great grandchildren and 5 great great-grandchildren. Edna is also survived by one brother, Ross Dixon and one sister, Mildred Dixon Schmalz.

After 101 years on this earth serving her Lord, Edna went to be with her heavenly father on January 10, 2020. There she will join the love of her life, Claude.
