John Richard MacFarlane, known as “Mac” or “Pop” to those closest to him, born March 16th 1930 in Providence, RI, was the embodiment of a true family man. He passed away, peacefully, on December 13th, 2021 in the presence of loved ones.
John relocated to Sarasota, FL in the winter of 1972 with his wife, Dorothy and three children, Erica, Keith, and Kurt, in pursuit of starting his own business. From there John enjoyed nothing but success, excelling in both property investment and a thriving insurance agency that is still in place today and run by his family. Family was John’s number one priority and joy. He loved nothing more than to see his tribe together sharing some laughs.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Dauenheimer) MacFarlane, son, Kurt MacFarlane, and his parents John W. MacFarlane and Mary (Frolicht) MacFarlane. He is survived by a long list of family members including his daughter Erica Davis, son Keith MacFarlane, grandchildren Lauren Horvath, Trevor Davis, Kendall Davis, Noah Jacob MacFarlane, Kevin MacFarlane, Sean MacFarlane, Allison MacFarlane, Jack MacFarlane, and great granddaughter, Frances Jane Davis.
John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was a graduate of Bryant College and then moved to NY where he got into the insurance industry, starting with Liberty Mutual, in what would lead to a very successful career. It was in NY where John met his wife, Dorothy. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage, traveling the world together before Dorothy’s unfortunate passing in 2012.
As mentioned, John loved his family and the thing that brought him the most joy was to see them enjoying the company of one another, but he had numerous other hobbies. John loved to travel, tell dirty jokes, and enjoy a glass of cheap vodka on the rocks while watching the sunset from his Casey Key home. John also had a home in Green Hill, RI, where he would spend his summers, frequenting the Westerly Yacht Club for cocktails and laughs.
In his later years, after the passing of his wife, John was accompanied and taken care of by his partner, Isle Schwartz. Ilse provided love, affection, and unwavering care for John until his very last moments.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on 1/7/2022, at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in his honor at support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
