It is with sadness and relief that we announce the passing of John Joseph O'Flynn, aged 89, who ascended to heaven peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024. John was born in NYC on August 12, 1934, to Irish immigrants, Joe & Annie O'Flynn. John was the eldest of three children, which included his sisters, Rosemary and Annemarie.
He was a proud graduate and accomplished athlete of St. Ann's Academy, Arizona State University, and Fordham University. Honored to be an American of Irish descent, he served his country as a member of the Marine Corps during the Korean War. His pride in being a Catholic of Irish descent who served his country without reservation led him to The Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and a lifetime of engagement with fellow veterans...once a Marine always a Marine!
With a gift for the gab and a love of teaching, he gravitated to life as an educator. He energetically taught Social Studies in the Mount Vernon and East Islip school districts for over 25 years. In this role he inspired many a young mind and developed countless life-long friendships. Upon retirement, he relocated to Sarasota, Florida with his loving and devoted wife, Sonja, to enjoy the rest of this amazing journey of life while enriching more lives that they touched.
John leaves behind his loving wife, Sonja, of 56 years. This was a match made in heaven if a house party could be called that. He always said she was the best part of him, and he loved her fiercely, she was his rock. In addition to Sonja, he leaves behind his proud son Sean & his love Lynn, his four adoring grandchildren, Jack, Emily, Maggie, & Molly as well as his loving sisters and admiring nieces & nephews. He touched many lives and made many friends, all of whom he cherished.
A funeral mass for John will be held Friday, June 28, 2024, at 10am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Sarasota. A committal service with honors will follow at 12:30pm at Sarasota National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please honor this veteran and so many more like him by making a donation to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
