

Julia Lee Docking “Julee”, artist, of Sarasota, passed away April 2, 2023, at the age of 102. Julia was born to the late Vivian Robey (father) and Virginia Caywood Robey (mother) in Bethesda, Maryland.
At an early age, Julee expressed an avid interest in art, which she continued to pursue throughout her life. She studied at the Corcoran Art School, the High Museum in Atlanta, and through private lessons. She eventually settled in Sarasota and immersed herself in her painting and the emerging art community. There she met her longtime partner and fellow artist, John Barends
Julee enjoyed painting in various mediums, often relying on chance and humor to initiate the process in both her abstract and realistic pieces. Her work has received numerous awards and has been widely exhibited, including at the Kennedy Center, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Ringling Museum.
Passionate about art, Julee always had a painting in the works.
Julia is preceded in death by her partner, John Barends, and her daughter, Marsha D. French. She is survived by her son, Robert Docking, Jr., six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, all residing in various areas of the country.
