Quentin Arthur Lot Jenkins, a resident of Sarasota, FL, passed away in his sleep on Saturday morning, May 19th, 2018. He was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on November 8th, 1931 to Charles and Ruth Jenkins. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture and achieved both a Master’s Degree and Ph. D (1965) in Rural Sociology, all from Iowa State University. He was a full professor and chair of the Sociology Department at Louisiana State University, where he taught for more than 30 years. He was an active member of the Rural Sociological Society and Southern Rural Sociological Association. He was president of the SRSA (1992). He served as Second Lieutenant in the Army following the Korean War. Quentin was passionate about social justice and immersing himself in other’s cultures. Everywhere he went he was eager to learn about communities and what was important to them. He joined the American Friends Service Committee for 2 years in Mexico educating and implementing government programs to help farming families with life-saving immunizations, farming and irrigation practices. In addition, he taught for 1 year in Peru at the American University in the late 1960s. He was an involved member of the Congress of Racial Equality, of SCORE, of the LSU Kiwanis Club, and was a mentor with Kid’s Hope. Quentin was known for being open-minded and a good listener, for his pealing laugh, and for always being game for a new experience. He loved music and was a devoted attendee of the Baton Rouge Symphony. Quentin enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He collected books, papers, tools, arrowheads, hunting dogs, bees, and most of all, friends. Quentin was an active member of UUMC in Baton Rouge, LA and First Methodist Church in Sarasota, FL.
Preceded in death by wife Dorothy (2008) and by parents Ruth and Charles Jenkins. He is survived by his brother Kermit (Pat) Jenkins; his sister Rosemary (Wade) Raridon; daughter Karee (Ed) Valek and their children Emily, Ed, and Olivia; daughter Sonja Hebert and her sons Andrew and Chase; son Jonathan Jenkins; and step-children Mark Butterfield, John Butterfield, and Lisa Gianelloni.
A funeral service is being planned for later this summer in Ainsworth, IA where he will be laid to rest. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Tidewell Hospice in Ellenton, FL, to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to the Sierra Club."
