December 25, 1921 – December 13, 2015
With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our wonderful mother Adena Bruce-Minogue on December 13, 2015 in Saskatoon, SK with her daughters by her side. We are grateful she was near us for the last two years and treasured our time with her all our lives.
Mom was born on the farm near Dinsmore to Gustav and Emma (Onasch) Funk, number 7 of 8 children. She married Jeffery Bruce on February 14, 1950 in Williams Lake, BC. They had 29 happy years together until Jeff passed from cancer in October 1979. In 1983, she started a new chapter in her life and married Russell Minogue. They were great company for each other until his passing in May 1995.
Adena leaves to celebrate her life her daughter Lynn Hubbs (Eldon) and their children Shelley Hubbs (Joseph) and Derek Hubbs (Desireé); daughter Gail McKenzie (Barclay) and their children Boyd McKenzie (Chelsea) and Scott McKenzie (Zoë Burke); great-grandchildren Joshua, Grace, Nathan Hubbs and Elliott and Tenley Hubbs. All will truly miss their Nonie.
Adena is survived by brothers Wilfred Funk and Royden Funk; sisters-in-law Mary Funk and Betty Bruce; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Russell’s children.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Gustav and Emma; her sister Christina Scroggs (Sherril); brothers Freeman (Dora), Joe (Lydia), Edwin (Madge), Fred; and sisters-in-law Sherry Funk, Hulda Funk and Caroline Funk. She is also predeceased by brother-in-law Gordon Bruce.
We will miss her talents in ceramics, gardening, sewing and crocheting. She made afghans and doilies by the dozen and the results are treasured by all who received them. We will never forget her love of scrabble, smear and nickel rummy. In her later years, she took up bridge and enjoyed the rounds with her card pals. Mom was an amazing cook and passed on the love of baking bread to both of her daughters. She loved picking raspberries and enjoyed the horseradish dig in the fall.
We are eternally grateful for her long life, many talents, sense of humor and lessons in life. As Aunt Audrey Pederson once said, mom taught us to “make do”, a huge compliment to Adena and to her daughters. Mom enjoyed her time at Caleb Manor in Kindersley with many old neighbours and friends from Eston. The move to Saskatoon was difficult for her because she hated to leave those life-long friendships but realized the importance of being closer to family support.
Thank you to the staff at Brightwater Senior Living: the nurses and resident assistants looked after her so well and all the support staff who kept their eyes on her, made her laugh and walked her to and from the dining room and hair salon. A special thank you to her table mates who made sure she could find her meal after her vision failed.
A Celebration of Adena's Life will take place in May 2016. Springtime is a time of renewal and hope for the future. Crops will be planted and meadow larks will be singing. Thank you to all who shared in her life. A further notice will be published with an exact date.
Memorial donations can be sent to Eston United Church, Box 67, Eston, SK S0L 1A0. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel - MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (306) 978-5200
