Alvina ""V"" Payne

1924 - 2014

Alvina was born on February 18, 1924 at Laird, SK. The family moved to the Bergheim district near Saskatoon in 1928. She took her schooling at Berheim School and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Growing up on a farm in the "Dirty Thirties" had many challenges and a hard work ethic was instilled in her at an early age. She moved into Saskatoon as a teenager and worked hard to upgrade herself and there she met the "love of her life" Kenneth Payne. They were married in 1946 and in 1949, they moved to Harris where the owned/managed "Kenny's Cafe". They moved back to Saskatoon in 1952 and she started her 25 year career with the Singer Sewing Machine Company. She and Ken enjoyed retirement in the little house on 2nd Street and Eastlake. "V" was a kind and gentle woman, loved by all who knew her. Alvina slipped away peacefully on October 26, 2014. She was predeceased by her husband, Ken (2004); her step-daughter, Arlene (1993); step-son-in-law, Walter; her parents, Solomon and Natalie Derr (1959); sister, Maria in Russia (1922); brother-in-law, George Shewell (1989); sister, Bertha (2001); brothers, Victor (2004), John (2005); sister, Mary (2013); sister-in-law, Pauline Derr (2013). She is survived by three step-grandchildren in Ontario, Nancy Howell, Sherry Queen (Graham) and Kenneth Howell; several step-great-grandchildren; nieces, Shirley Opdahl (Irving), Joyce Opdahl (Conrad), Valva Derr; nephew, Kenneth Derr; special niece, Barb Morris and faithful visitors, Nancy Chappell and Donna Hassell as well as many beloved nieces and nephews on the Payne side of the family. The family would like to thank everyone at Porteous Lodge for the loving, compassionate care Alvina received during her four year stay. God bless all of you. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 3:00 p.m. at Floral Cemetery (south off Highway 11, 5km East of the Grasswoods service station on Floral Road).
