It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey Downey announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She passed away peacefully on August 9, 2015 at Royal University Hospital. Mom was born on September 30, 1927 in the Asquith district. It was there that she received her education. On September 22, 1946 she married her best friend George (Bud) Downey. Mom was a hard worker and a tremendous partner for dad on the farm. She loved the outdoors, was a skillful gardener and enjoyed her flowers. Our mother loved people. Her door was always open with a cup of tea and homemade cookies on the table. We all remember well the food: home cooked meals at the dining table pulled out to the limits. Our mom and grandma was a kind and caring person. Her philosophy was always have a good attitude and strong work ethic and these, she said, would take you a long way in the pursuit of your dreams in life. Mom lived her life through God's eyes, working every day to prepare herself for His kingdom. She was filled with passion for laughter, strength and a positive attitude. She left footprints of her love and kindness on each of our hearts. Our mom will be remembered for her cheerful smile and amazing ability to think of others. She was a model of what strength, hope and courage truly are. When we lost our dad and brother, Barry, she wore her grief with grace. No words can express the pure sadness in our hearts with the loss of this special person. She was not a woman to quit at any task. She always said "where there is a will there is a way." Mom did not give up at anything. She looked forward in life and life gave her the love she taught us. She was a woman of generosity, inner strength and always willing to try anything. Her true gift to the world was her friendship and unconditional love for those she held dear. Mom was an optimist, always making the best of all challenges that came her way. Her genuine kindness, passionate nature, warm smile, and gentle touch will always be remembered. Audrey was a member of the Asquith United Church. She was a charter member and president of the Asquith United Church Women with its inception in January 1962. She taught Sunday School for a number of years and always helped with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed community life and never missed the boy's school and sports activities. In her senior years she was a good support person at Third Avenue United Church. We often heard her say that Third Avenue Congregation was indeed her "wing and a prayer" after so many family losses. Mom loved her time as a volunteer in the United Church Resource Centre now known as Life Lines. Mom was predeceased by her husband George (Bud) in 1997, her oldest son Barry in 1998, her parents, three brothers and six sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing sons Brian (Nancy) and Lyndon (Caroline); daughter-in-law Beryle; six grandchildren, Craig, Jeff (Merilyn), Shari (Andre), Scott (Jaime), Kyle (Alyssa) and Caylee; and six beautiful great-grandchildren, Jayden, Kassen, Sharred, Matthew, Evan and Katherine. The Service of Remembrance will be held at Third Avenue United Church on August 13, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Asquith Cemetery. Donations in Audrey's memory may be sent to Third Avenue United Church at 304 3rd Avenue North, S7K 2J1. Arrangements entrusted to MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (306-978-5200)
