Barbara Ann Kaluzy (Brown)
December 4, 1944 to August 7, 2022
Lovingly survived by Melanie (daughter) and Arlo, granddaughters Darby and Presly; Lindsay (son) and Jacques; Rosalyn (granddaughter) and Jason, Elyse (granddaughter), and Gregory (grandson) and Kathleen; Don (brother); Candy (sister) and John; Alice (sister in law); and numerous cherished relatives and friends. Predeceased by Elmer (husband), Lenna (daughter), John (father), and Hilda (mother).
Barb was born and raised in Biggar, Saskatchewan, and enjoyed many adventures with relatives of the Brown and Brownlee families. She later married Elmer and together they managed the farm. She said her best career was as a farm wife at Perdue, working alongside her soulmate. She ensured her children had many opportunities to follow their passions, and supported all their adventures, big or small. She instilled strong work ethic in her children and supported them in their careers.
For 15 years, she taught piano lessons to children in the local community and had many fond memories from her work as a substitute teacher. She always loved to learn and took various classes such as sewing, hair cutting, cake decorating, and how to use an iPad. Barb always loved to cook and entertain. If you ever stopped by the house, you were sure to be presented with a pleasing variety of food to fill your belly, and never left her house without some extra treats in hand.
After retiring from the farm, Barb and Elmer moved to Saskatoon and flourished in the opportunities they had to watch their grandchildren grow. Barb always said her “best job” was babysitting grandchildren. She provided unconditional love, support and encouragement to each grandchild and recognized all the attributes each of them had that made her so proud.
Upon moving to the city, Barb and Elmer were so blessed to settle into a neighborhood of new friends, who soon became family. This close network celebrated all special occasions and supported each other through many life events. In retirement, Barb’s social schedule was always full. She had a huge and open heart, and was thrilled to share some Canadian “firsts” to some of her new Canadian neighbors. The Driveway Divas (you know who you are ladies!) provided so many cherished memories, fun and competitive card games, and unwavering camaraderie.
Barb was a natural caregiver to others, and was selfless in her love to Elmer and Lenna as they managed their health challenges at the end of their lives. During her own last few weeks, she frequently expressed how blessed she felt. Never a selfish person, she did not realize the impact she had on others, and just how loved she was by so many family and friends. Our hearts are shattered, yet we are well-aware of the gifts she gave each of us as she has gone to be with her loved ones already passed. At Barb’s request, there will be no memorial service.
Thank you to the members of the healthcare teams that recently helped care for Barb. The family wishes to thank Barb’s friends for helping in so many ways while the family has been unable to do so. We appreciate all messages and kind words expressed for our mother, grandmother, and sister.
Those wishing to donate in Barb’s memory may do so to Ovarian Cancer Canada (Saskatoon Chapter), Royal University Hospital Foundation or the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care Unit).
