It is with immense sadness, our family announces Barry’s unexpected but peaceful passing at home, at the age of 75. He will be greatly missed and loved by his wife Dorothy (Fullerton), daughter Trina Mastel, son-in-law Keith and grandchildren Jordan and Logan.
Barry was born in Dinsmore, Saskatchewan to Roy and Jean Thomson and grew-up on the farm in a loving family of brothers Rod and Gerry and sisters Gail and Karen. Barry attended Queen Elizabeth, a country school close by, as well as Dinsmore Composite School. In later years he read the encyclopedias just for fun. You always wanted to be on his team for Trivial Pursuit.
Growing up Barry was involved in many farm life activities including the 4-H beef club. He participated in ball and hockey but liked being a spectator the best. His Dinsmore Dynamos jacket said “fan” on the sleeve. Baseball was by far his favourite sport and the Blue Jays his favorite team. He always talked about the strategy of the game.
As a teenager Barry had many adventures even hitch hiking to California with a friend. He worked as a farm hand, in construction, and at Domtar, a fibre board manufacturer before starting a 47 year career as a driver at Thomsons’ Delivery.
Barry and Dorothy were married in 1969 at Lacadena, Saskatchewan. They were blessed with a daughter Trina and son Tylar and enjoyed lots of fun family adventures including summers at Jackfish Lake and a trip to Expo 86.
The biggest sadness of Barry’s life was Tylar’s passing in 1990.
Phantom was the first dog in our family and helped immensely with the grief of Tylar’s passing. Yoyo was the second dog and Barry’s best buddy, accompanying him daily to Tim Hortons for coffee.
Barry’s interests were wide. He loved music and had a collection of 3500 rock in roll records. He loved history, coffee at his friends, hunting and fishing, all types of sports, beer, socializing, the “Lake Group” and travelling. He was fortunate to visit Hawaii, Mexico, The Dominican Republic, Cuba, Hong Kong, Bali and many other stops from cruises. The best part is that these trips were shared with friends. Barry was always interested to see more and learn more. Barry’s favorite “food group” was Revel, consuming them daily and sharing with friends.
Barry passed away during the World Junior gold medal game. We would like to think he knows the score.
We love and miss you.
A Celebration of Barry’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday January 16, 2023 at Mayfair United Church (902 33rd Street West Saskatoon). Please use east door.
