It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend, Beatrice Elaine Shand on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the age of 82.
Beatrice was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Ellen (Rose) Johnson, & loving husband of 53 Years, Donald. Left to cherish her memories are her three sons; David (Denise), Keith (Mari) and Jason (Dawna); grandchildren Colby (Lindsey), Sydney (John), Isabel, Clara, Tate, Tess, Matthew and Kyla; great-grandchild Brynn; brothers Wallace (Helen), Chris (Tanya) and sisters Ruby and Candace.
Beatrice was born in Arran, SK. on October 26, 1940. She attended nursing school in Yorkton, SK and graduated in 1962. She married Donald Joseph Shand on August 3, 1963, and they resided in Melville, SK. where they raised their boys. Beatrice worked as a Registered Nurse & Nursing Supervisor at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville for more than 25 years.
Bea volunteered for Melville Ambulance Service in a number of different roles and then went on to complete schooling to graduate as an Advanced Care Paramedic. Beatrice dedicated her life to serving many communities medical needs in any way that she could. Shortly after Donald retired from the CNR, Beatrice also made the decision to retire from St. Peter’s Hospital. But they did not let retirement stop them from staying busy and enjoying life. For the next 13 years, Beatrice took on contract nursing positions at various northern communities in Nunavut, NWT, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. She continued to serve northern communities as a Nurse Practitioner. Donald accompanied her and together they enjoyed meeting new people while they experienced new adventures. Don & Bea would return to Melville each summer putting on hundreds of kilometers visiting family and friends in their truck and fifth wheel RV. Eventually they downsized to a more manageable motor home and continued to enjoy camping. Their favorite camping memories were of Asessippi Campground at Lake of the Prairies, where they would meet up with their boys and their families every summer for August long weekend. After Donald passed away in 2016, Beatrice continued the memorable tradition until she was no longer able to make the trip on her own. It was then that the boys would pick her up and bring her so she could continue to spend the time with her family.
When her health started to fail, Beatrice moved from Kamsack to Yorkton and then to her final home at Diamond House in Warman, SK in 2019. Being at this location allowed her to be close to her youngest son, Jason and his family. It was there that she took her last breath on November 29, 2022. The Shand family would like to thank the Diamond House staff for the exceptional care they provided when she needed it most.
As per Beatrice’s request, a funeral will not be held. A private family service will be held at a later date. Her unconditional love, support and wisdom will remain with us forever. Rest in Peace our dear Beatrice.
