Candace is mourned and greatly missed by her husband of 62 years Dale; daughter Elizabeth (Remy) Waterkamp; son Thomas (Melanie) Heath and grandchildren: Carmen and Isabel Waterkamp, Adrian and Max Heath, Rowan (George) Rocskar, as well as her great-granddaughter Stevie. Candace is also mourned by her two sisters, Ethel Mongovius and Patricia Morris; her brother-in-law Allan Heath; and countless nieces, nephews and extended family, all of whom she held dear.
Born in a farmhouse near Edson, Alberta, Candace was the youngest of 18 children born to Cynthia and Thomas Mills. She attended the nearby Trail School, Sutherland School and Bedford Road.
Candace had a distinguished 31-year career as a traffic manager at CJWW, following her work with the university station CJUS and CJSW in Swift Current. Outside of her professional life, Candace had a passion for ceramics, which she began in 1974. She became a talented artist and shared her love for the craft by teaching and hosting ceramic painting sessions each week at home with a group of eight cherished friends.
Candace’s resilience in the face of health challenges was nothing short of inspiring. In 1998, she battled cancer and triumphed as a survivor. Over the years, she faced additional hardships, including a fractured spine and lung cancer surgery in 2017. Yet, through every struggle, Candace remained a fighter. She faced each day with a strength and grace that will forever be remembered. Even as her illness returned this year, she continued to live with an unwavering spirit, savoring the joy of life with those she loved.
In summing up her attitude toward life, Candace recently wrote, “have a wonderful life, laugh, enjoy living. listen to the music, dance! It’s all worthwhile…no matter what.”
In accordance with Candace’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory.
The family invites all who knew Candace to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share their thoughts as they wish.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation Saskatoon, Palliative Care Unit, in recognition of the compassionate care Candace received.
