Catherine Mary Irene West

Cathy passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, in St. Paul’s Hospital after a short battle with cancer. She passed away with family and friends around her bedside. Catherine Mary Irene West was born December 29, 1958 in Shellbrook, Sk and attended school in Shell Lake. She was involved in a mva in June 1975, leaving her a quadriplegic. In 1976 she attended Radius Tutoring Project. Cathy soon integrated into Walter Murray Collegiate where she completed her adult grade 12 in June 1978. She then returned to Radius and worked as a secretary for the next 4 years. During this time she moved to Cheshire Homes and lived there until 1985 when she moved in with her friend Brenda. In 1995 she decided she wanted complete independence and moved into her own apartment where she has lived ever since. In 1982 she began her career as an Instructor Aide at SIAST where her students looked forward to her instruction. She developed close friendships with students and co-workers alike. Her independence depended in large part upon the participation of the Home Care nurses who also became close friends. She also had friends who filled the role of extra help when needed and were there to provide laughter, entertainment, and support. Before her health began to decline she spent many hours enjoying plays, movies, many restaurants and the pie at the Farmer’s Market. Even after she wasn’t able to spend as much time out and about she always had time for Tim Horton’s. Cathy would like to thank all the Home Care workers who made it possible for her to live as independently as possible. She also really appreciated her friends and co-workers at SIAST who made coming to work everyday a pleasure and she would also like to thank her long time friends who stayed close to her and supported her through all the many little adventures in her life. Cathy was predeceased by: her parents Caroline Roy & Stanley West; her brothers Edwin, Bill, Louis, & Sid West; and her sister-in-law Dorothy West. Cathy leaves to cherish her memory: her brothers & sisters Florence (Camille) Shreiner, Roy (Jackie) West, Al (Armella) West, Raymond West, Len West, Bert (Cammie) West, Pat (Bert) Larmand, Vic (Betty Ann) West & Gus West; sisters-in-law Ada West, Judy West (Bob) & Joyce West; close friends Vivian Warkentin & Allison Fu. A Celebration of Cathy’s Life will be held on Sunday September 25, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre (915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon).
