November 26 2022 at her home in Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK.
Dot was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend, Carman (2006); sister Jean (Bill) McMillen; sister Helen (Cy) Forrest; and brother Ray (Iris) Mills. She leaves to mourn: her children Diane Wilson, Dan (Dori), Heather (Gil) Penner, Geoff (Deb), Pixie (Graham) Hoffman; 13 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She had the pleasure of visiting with so many of her family this summer, including her youngest great grandchild, amazingly 105 years between them. The family was so blessed to have a mother who took an interest in the lives of each and every one.
Dorothy grew up in Milden,SK where she pitched for the ball team and played the piano at local dances. In 1936 she received her Associate with the Toronto Conservatory of Music and eventually taught piano, acquiring over the years a vast repertoire of classics, hymns and sing along songs that she could play from memory. On the ivories, mom could lift a room, filling it with joyful sounds. She shared her talents, musical and otherwise, as a volunteer, and was honoured to receive a pin from the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre commemorating her twenty five years of service to the residents.
She was the essence of her name, a cook, and a wonderful one. Her cookie platter in this holiday season was something to behold. Several dozen varieties of homemade cookies, slices, and fudges, each one painstakingly assembled and decorated, many with exotic names. She made family members individual favourites, and this went on for decades. In later years, Dot settled for a box of chocolates in which friends and family kept her amply supplied. Her signature goodbye, genuinely expressed to everyone as they departed was “Have a chocolate!”
Dorothy was sustained through the years by an abiding Christian faith. She had a rich and full life which she leaves, greatly loved.
A family graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family wish to express a heartfelt and sincere thank you to all health professionals who, throughout mom’s journey, provided her with such good care. A special thank you to the Bethany Aspen staff who befriended mom and elevated her quality of life the past four years.
