February 14, 1943 – April 6, 2014
With her beloved husband Victor by her side Edith ‘edie’ Julianna Karwacki gently passed away on the evening of April 6th, 2014 at the RUH. She remains a loving inspiration to her children and grandchildren: Nicole and Andrew Scheidl and their children, David, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Stephen, Anna, Joseph and Katherine; David Karwacki and Laurie (Flaman) and their children, Jonathan, Alix, Sarah, Luke and Matthew (deceased); Andrea and Jeffrey Urquhart and their children, Joshua, Mackenzie and Zachary; Grant Karwacki and Peter Grimaldi. edie was our ‘spitfire’. We will never forget her laughter and generosity of spirit. She gave all of us such an outstanding example of courage and selfless devotion to her family and friends. edie taught us all to have a competitive spirit; she was an avid sports fan cheering on her kids’ and grandkids’ sports teams. She will be particularly remembered for her love of basketball, her great cooking and sense of style. As well, her Catholic faith was very important to her and she lived it in very concrete and practical ways. edie was born into the Gabriel clan on the family farm near Porcupine Plains SK on February 14th 1943 to the late Katherine and John Gabriel. She is survived by her siblings Isabel, Frank, Helen, Cecilia, Mary and Gloria. She attended the University of Saskatchewan (B.A., B.Ed) to become a teacher and worked summers at Greenwater Provincial Park where she met the love of her life, Victor Karwacki. They married on August 17th, 1963, embarking on the grand adventure of married life, both starting as rookie teachers at Humboldt Collegiate, and soon after, celebrating the birth of four children in whirlwind succession. edie returned to University to earn a second degree and taught at St. Charles and St. James elementary school in Saskatoon and was one of the founding teachers at Bishop James Mahoney High School. edie was the epitome of a master teacher and valued learning and knowledge. She loved her students and sharing her knowledge with them. They loved her in return and she was affectionately known as ‘Mrs. K’. She was proud of her teacher colleagues and the work they did together both inside the classroom and out. She was very sad to leave the teaching profession, due to health concerns. edie also enjoyed her time at the family cabin at Chitek Lake, and at her and Vic’s snowbird casita in Green Valley, Arizona. She loved to explore the arts, culture and history of the Spanish southwest. She and Vic also volunteered their time assisting the Catholic mission in the area and played an active role in their Green Valley community life. She leaves a great hole in our lives and we will honour her memory by living our lives with generosity and courage. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon) on Tuesday, April 15th at 4pm with a reception to follow. She was dedicated to Catholic education and if you wish to make a donation in her memory we would ask that you make it to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation.
