It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden passing of Ernest on March 19. Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife Diane of 56 years, son Anton, son Evan (Alexis), precious grandchildren Wallace and Louisa, brother Owen, sister Deanna, sister-in-law Wanda, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Barbara Olfert, brothers Benjamin and Arthur, sister Kathy, and brother-in-law Bill.
Ernie was born in Swift Current, SK on August 7, 1943. He grew up on the family farm near McMahon, SK and later moved to Saskatoon to study at the U of S. Receiving his DVM in 1969, he was a member of the first graduating class from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. He spent a year in Calgary at a private practice and it was in Calgary where he met Diane. Following was a 40 year career at the U of S where he showed passion and commitment to his work as a veterinarian, teacher, educator, researcher and author. One area of his work involved establishing humane treatment of lab animals using guide publications and online training courses for lab animal users worldwide.
Ernie was a dedicated supporter of many organizations including the Saskatchewan SPCA and the Canadian Mental Health Association. In retirement he researched family genealogy and published a book about the family history of his grandfather Daniel.
Ernie had a unique sense of humor, was incredibly kind and generous, a super cook, an enthusiastic cyclist, walker, and hiker. He enjoyed family vacations, especially trips to Tofino, BC and Kakabeka Falls, ON.
We will cherish Ernie's memory in our hearts.
At Ernie's request, there will be no funeral. If you wish to donate in Ernie's memory, his preferred charities included the Saskatchewan SPCA, Canadian Mental Health Association, Saskatoon Friendship Inn, and the Mennonite Central Committee.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9.
