June 28, 1926 – December 27, 2019
The family of Florence Jackson sadly announces her passing on Friday, December 27, 2019 at the age of 93.
Florence leaves her children: Barbara Jackson of Vancouver BC, Carolyn (Daryl) Potratz of Saskatoon and David Jackson of Silton, Saskatchewan; grandchildren Elysia Bourne, Natalie Potratz and Ian Folk; sisters Alice Youngs and Dorothy (Ken) Robertson; sister-in-law Memory Myers and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Harry in 2008; parents Maurice and Lilah (nee Anderson) Hayes; father and mother-in-law Elmer and Selma (nee Libke) Jackson; sisters Margaret Palmer and Thelma MacDonald; brothers Gordon, Bill, Dick, Percy and Ross; brothers and sisters-in-law John Palmer, Maureen Campbell, Phyllis Hayes, Laviah Hayes and Clare Youngs; and granddaughter Justine Potratz.
Born and raised near Eatonia, Saskatchewan she attended Bailey School. In Saskatoon, she attended secretarial school and married Harry. She enjoyed her work at The Department of Veterans Affairs and Kraft Foods until they began raising their children. Florence then dedicated her life to her family and to caring for and comforting others through many rewarding years of nursing at the Rosetown Hospital, volunteering within seniors’ communities, and offering pastoral care and much service through the Rosetown United Church.
Her caring ways reached out and touched many lives.
Florence expressed her love of nature and the outdoors from an early age, always enthusiastically volunteering to help care for and ride the horses.
She enjoyed annual visits to BC and loved hiking and travelling with family. In Rosetown, her love of gardening won her local awards in horticulture shows for the beauty that she created around their home during many of her retirement years.
She was blessed with good health and an abundance of energy throughout her life and looked to serve her family and community whenever possible.
She and Harry were deeply devoted to their grandchildren and were always there when needed. They created many fun memories together over the years.
After Harry’s passing, she lived her later years in the seniors’ community of St. Volodymyr Villa and Terrace in Saskatoon, continuing to garden as long as she could in nearby community gardens.
From the age of 90, she enjoyed using walking poles (a gift for her 90th birthday) on her daily walks with her friends.
She was always cheerful and ready to uplift and enjoy a humorous exchange with all who knew her. She expressed her love for life and family in so many ways.
She is greatly missed and lovingly remembered by family and many friends.
From her personal writings: “The highest tribute to my loved one is not grief, but gratitude.”
We will do our best to live those words in our own lives.
Also from her journals, she describes her own beloved Mom: “My mother had an inner harmony, essentially spiritual, which translated into outward harmony. She achieved a state of inner spiritual grace and lived as was meant to in the eyes of God.”
She, herself, lived to achieve this inner harmony and contentment.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving, excellent care given to their Mom at St. Paul’s Hospital and Preston Extendicare. They also wish to thank Acadia-McKague Funeral Centre for their care.
As requested by Mom, there will be no funeral service. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, in her remembrance, compassion is the gift to be freely given to all.
