Gordon John McMurtry, "Gord", 75 years of age of Saskatoon, SK, died peacefully at home with his loving wife, Jane, by his side on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. He fought valiantly, but lost his life to cancer. Gord is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane; son Paul (Jennifer) and daughter Eleanor of Calgary; son Matthew (Jessica) of Vancouver; daughter-in-law, Danielle and children Marc, Owen and Mila of Regina; his siblings, Mary (Tim), Heather (John); Tim (Trish) of Saskatoon; sisters-in-law Jill (Larry), Pam, Suellen (Tom), as well as many more family and friends. Gord was predeceased by his son, Michael, who died of ALS in 2021.
Gord was passionate about designing and building functional structures for everyday living. This was demonstrated throughout his life, in his career as an Industrial Arts teacher, in many building projects including garages, sheds, an addition to the house, and in reclaiming a crumbling cabin at LaRonge. His efforts not only provided for his family, but brought them together, whether through teaching moments or time together at the house or cabin.
Respected for his intelligence, integrity, humility, and humanity, Gord was “othercentric”, expressing his Christian faith in service to his family, church, and community. He had a perfect blend of values; he accomplished what was necessary, but had no desire for excess. His love for his children and grandchildren was deep and selfless; he has been a fine role model for a meaningful life.
Gord’s family would like to thank those who provided kind, skilled care to him in his last days: Saskatoon Community Clinic, Saskatoon Palliative Care and Home Care, Community Paramedics, and loving family members and friends.
