Hank was born on November 23, 1955, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Irene and Steven Lashta. He grew up on a farm near Yorkton, where he developed a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and the simple joys of life. His childhood was filled with adventure—helping with cattle, working alongside his father, gardening, eating many of the best perogies, and sharing laughter and mischief with his siblings.
After high school, Hank attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where he studied sociology. It was there that he met the love of his life, Cathy. Their connection grew into a lifelong partnership, and together they built a beautiful life over 45 years of marriage, grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering support.
Hank and Cathy shared many adventures, traveling the world together and later creating lasting family memories closer to home, especially at Emma Lake. Hank cherished time spent with family and friends, whether it was around a campfire, on the beach, or gathered for one of many Sunday brunches.
Hank also warmly welcomed his children’s partners into the family, valuing the relationships he built with each of them. His family was always at the center of his life, and he took great joy in bringing everyone together.
Throughout his life, Hank was known for his quick wit, strong convictions, and thoughtful perspective. This served him very well during his 31 years working in Corrections, and his time spent on the provincial bargaining committee. He dedicated himself to improving the lives of others through his work and his involvement in advocacy and committee roles. He had a natural ability to communicate with clarity and purpose, offering advice, support, and encouragement to those around him.
Hank had many passions, including gardening, cooking, and spending time outdoors. He took pride in growing and preserving food, especially making pickles, salsa, and homemade preserves to share with family and friends. He was also known for his love of games, lively discussions, and a good dance floor.
Over the past 22 years, Hank faced significant health challenges with strength and determination. He was fortunate to receive a stem cell transplant in 2012 where his brother Stephen was his donor - it was thanks to him that we got the chance to enjoy the last 14 years.
Hank’s unmatched resilience allowed him to continue sharing in life’s meaningful moments with his family, for which they are deeply grateful. The family extends sincere thanks to the healthcare teams at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, Royal University Hospital, and St. Paul’s Hospital for their care and compassion - but especially to Dr. Sabry and his team, and their social worker Renee. Though we wish he never had to face his health challenges, he made the best of it and found many friends along the way, he always loved getting together with his “Club Mag” group or as they became lovingly known his “cancer club”.
Hank is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; children Haylie MacIntosh (Rob), Erin Lashta (Josh), Ryan Lashta (Cassie), and grandchildren (Emily, Drayton, Miles, and Luke); his mother, Irene Lashta; his sister, Debbie Lashta; his sister-in-law, Lucy Lashta; and his niece and nephew, Ginette and Mark. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Peter Walker, and Cathy’s siblings: Sharon Griffin (Bill), Duane Walker (Leah), and Susan Maisonneuve (Daryn), as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Steven Lashta; his brother, Stephen Lashta (Hank’s stem cell donor); and his mother-in-law, Joyce Walker.
Hank will be remembered for his love of family, his sense of humor, his resilience, his skill in negotiation and debate, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of connection, kindness, and cherished memories that will live on in all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, April 20, 2026 at 2:00pm at Acadia – McKague's Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive), with luncheon to follow at the Sgt.
