Helen Geraldine Wiens

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Helen. She passed away peacefully at the Circle Drive Special Care Home at the age of 89 years. She was born to Henry and Maria (nee Bestvater) Block. Her mother died giving her birth and Helen was raised by her father and older sisters Mary, Sarah and Anna. She lived in the Dundurn area and received her schooling in Dundurn. She was baptised in 1944 at the Dundurn Mennonite Church by Rev. J.J. Thiessen. She worked on the farm until she met Jack Wiens. They married in August of 1945. They then bought their own farm and lived there until 1980 when Jack’s health was failing. They moved into their retirement home at Blackstrap until Jack’s passing later in 1980. Helen lived at the lake in the summer and rented an apartment in Saskatoon for the winter. In 1982, she married George Zacharias and they lived in Saskatoon. George passed away in 2000. Helen moved into a condo and later on when things started to get hard for her to do, she moved into assisted living. In July of 2014, Helen moved to Circle Drive Special Care Home. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Bratlien and her children Rob (Kathy) Bratlien, Jocelyn (Regan) Skutelnik and children Sarah, Rebecca & Christian, Karen Bratlien (Gary) and child Jacob; Kevin (Khris) Bratlien and children Jessica, Ethany and Aspen. Her son Eric (Lois) Wiens and their children Mark (Darlene) and children Ethan and Nate; and Erin Wiens, one sister Louise Voth, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jack Wiens, her parents Henry and Maria (Bestvater) Block, step-mother Olga (Jantz), 7 brothers and sisters and second husband George Zacharias. Memorial Donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (204-3775 Pasqua St. Regina, SK, S4S 6W8) Funeral Service for Helen will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2014 (exactly 34 years after her husband Jack’s funeral) at Nutana Park Mennonite Church (1701 Ruth St E, Saskatoon, SK).
