March 6, 1936 - January 31, 2021
Hildegard Elvira Brown was born on March 6, 1936 on her family’s farm near Central Butte, to Jacob and Aganeta Brown. She died at Central Haven Care Home on January 31, 2021, at the age of 84. Hilda grew up on the farm and went to school in Grandview and Central Butte. After graduation she attended Saskatoon Business College. Hilda worked for the Purchasing Department at the U of S after completing the program. Hilda married Bernhard (Ben) Thiessen on July 30, 1966. Hilda left her work at the U of S and became a busy farm wife. They had two sons, David born in 1968 and Alvin born in 1971. Hilda kept busy with raising their sons, helping with the farm work, planting a large garden, volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages and at Mennonite Central Committee. She was an active member of First Mennonite Church and Pleasant Point Mennonite Church, where she sang in the choir and was active with Ladies Aid. Hilda loved to travel. Her first travel adventure occurred after high school when she boarded a bus to BC with her cousin Anne. They worked picking berries and even hitchhiked! Although car trips were her favourite mode, Hilda travelled by aircraft, coach and cruise ship and found it interesting to see how people lived in other parts of the world. Hilda’s family was important to her and she welcomed her daughters-in-law and delighted in her four grandchildren. Hilda was a great baker and made the best chocolate chip cookies! Hilda was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Aganeta Brown, her husband Ben Thiessen, her brother Fred Brown, brother-in-law Harry Unrau, brother-in-law Arnold Penner, and sister-in law Helen Bergman. Left to treasure her memory are her sons David and Lori Weiler-Thiessen, grandchildren Matthias Thiessen and Natalia Thiessen, and Alvin and Angele Thiessen, grandchildren Nathan Thiessen and Thomas Thiessen, her sister Leonora Unrau of Winnipeg, MB, sister-in-laws, Lilly Penner of Surrey, BC, Margaret and Wilf Snider of Guernsey, SK, Ann Brown of Shaunavon, SK, brother-in-law Julius Bergman of Boissevain, MB, nieces and nephews, cousins Jake and Verdell Andres and Jo Dyck, all of Coaldale, AB, and lifetime friends Ruth Martens, Hilda Patkau and Sally Kasdorf, all of Saskatoon, SK.
