It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Hilde Marks at the age of 94 on Friday November 29, 2024 at the Cozy Nest Care Home. Hilde was born January 13, 1930 at the homestead near Spiritwood, Sask. The family endured many hardships in the 30's, sometimes snaring rabbits so they could eat. Being the only girl and the youngest she was able to have a special horse (Jean) and dog (Nero) to keep her company.
When mom was nine years old, her mom (our grandmother) got sick and grandma's Gall bladder became infected and she was hospitalized for a few months. She became very jaundiced and had to wait until the jaundice got better until they could operate. After that ,grandma came home but had to rest in bed for about a year, meanwhile mom had to do all the housework, cooking and wash clothes while Grandpa and her brothers Arnold and Erhard were busy working on the farm.
Mom loved music, playing piano, helping her husband on the farm. Mom was able to finish grade 8 which was a big accomplishment for her time, mom always wanted to be a teacher. Because she went to school she could read to people who were unable to read in the community. Mom would help them read important papers and write letters for them. Mom was very knowledgeable about local history. People would come and ask her about things of the past and often she would know the history about it.
Mom and Dad got married May 1, 1949. They lived and farmed 12 miles south of Spiritwood, and to subsidize the farm they both worked at the Spiritwood Bakery. In 1969 they sold the farm and then moved to the town of Spiritwood, there they purchased a hardware store and renovated it into a restaurant which they called the Marks' Cafe and they owned it until 1974. When dad had his first stroke in 1975, mom quit her job at the hospital as dietary aid to look after dad.
Hilde loved her husband Otto, her children and grandchildren very much. She also had a great love for God, the church and the pastors, and enjoyed singing in different choirs. Mom loved people as she always got along with neighbors and anyone that knew her. Mom was a great host, also a great cook making lunches and suppers for others including pastors of different denominations. She loved gardening and was always very organized, clean & tidy.
Hilde was predeceased by her husband Otto Marks, parents Wilhelm and Amalia Marks, siblings Arnold, Erhard, two infant brothers Berthold and Paul She leaves behind to cherish her memory three son's
