Jan Aloyisius Nijman

Jan Nijman left this life peacefully with his family by his side Thursday, December 16th, 2010. He leaves behind a legacy of those who loved him, Charlotte his wife of 63 years; his daughters Judy (Don Junor), Linda (the late David England), Jana Lynn (Jim Scharfstein); his grandchildren Sean (Kristen) and Heather (Jodi), Kent (Angie) and Kurtis (Krista), Jillian(Jeremy), Stephanie, Andrea and Lauren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Nellie Schille, his sister- in-law Doreen Nijman, his brothers-in-law Andy Johnson, Charlie Schille, Vern Schille and Ray Styranka and many nieces and nephews. Jan was predeceased by his parents Matthias and Anna Nijman, his brothers Thys and Wies and his sister Anne; his in-laws Rose and Andy Schille; his sisters- in-law Elvina Johnson, Beverly Schille, Julie Nijman and Donna Schille and brother-in-law Ed Schille; his first grandson Andrew, his son-in-law David England and his niece Lexine. Jan was born in North Battleford, Sask on October 20th, 1922. He worked as a Railway mail clerk and for 30 years at the Saskatoon Post Office. He retired and became a real estate agent and then a Commissionaire until he really retired. Jan proudly served his country overseas in WW11 and spent the last nine years, until his death, in the Veterans Village at Sherbrooke. Dad was a man who made friends easily, loved old movies and simple things like ice cream. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents at Sherbrooke Community Center, and the Veterans Village, particularly House 10, for making dad’s life comfortable and his passing peaceful. Thank you for loving him. The Celebration of Jan’s life took place Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Sherbrooke Community Center, 401 Acadia Dr. officiated by Rev. Ray Purdy. Donations were made in Jan’s name to Sherbrooke Community Center; Veteran’s Village (401 Acadia Dr. Saskatoon, SK S7H 2E7). Arrangements were entrusted to David Grambo Acadia-McKagues Funeral Centre (955-1600).
